THE POLK COUNTY ITEMIZER. Ad m ille d to th e secon d clan« o f m ail m atter. V. P. FIS K E. I Itemizer, one year in advance................................................. $1 SUBSCRIPTION Witti Weekly Oregonian or Semi-weekly Journal............. 2 t With Goat Magazine................................................................. 1 ’ PHONES: MUTUAL 1 Offe*, HeHÌ to the trouble o f expressingan opinion in the matter, saying they had enough to attend to without bringing politics in to bother them, and these should rightly be «minted as against such a measure, but we did not do so, counting only those who answered unqualifiedly in the negative or affirmative. WecoulJ possibly also have swol len the negative vote by asking all ladies of the household their opinion o f the question, but we did not take the trouble to interview any but the lady of the house. The result was: For suffrage— 137 Against suffrage— 437 Now the Itemizer has always contended that if left to the women themselves they would vote to not accept the franchise, not only in Dallas but in Polk county, and the state o f Oregon. We also believe that if this mat ter was even now left to the women o f Washington, Cal ifornia or any other state that has adopted equal suf-. frage, and a vote could be secured from each and every lady resident o f these states, the proposition would be vot ^ against by a goodly majority. This may seem a broad statement, but it is a fact that in the states hav ing suffrage but asmall per cent o f the women ever go to the polls or take any more interest in politics than they do in the stkte3 without the boon? The reason is that the true mother, with her hands fully occupied in care- ing for her progeny, takes no interest in politics, and does not want to, believing that by her example and watchcare in the limits of the home circle she can do more to advance the interest o f mankind, mentally, msrallyand physically, than she could in any other way. Such are the brainy pioneer mothers who have made the best men o f today the men of honor, the men who stand for all that is good and against the evil. This statement does not necessarily imply that women who desire suffrage are of another class, because there are circumstances that may change their view point on the matter—an abundance o f time at their disposal, and a desire to enter other fields except that o f the home, scarcity of children, and other things which permit of their taking a wider scope in life’ s affairs. l'he Itemizer further believes that it has chosen an ideal place for the taking of a vote on the suffrage ques tion, and that it has secured a vote o f purely American mothers. There is no foreign population in this city, and the women who have cast a vote on the subject are as fair a specimen o f our best population as could possibly be obtained. Our w >m m a re intelligent, and as a rule very well read and versed on the subjects of the day, we believe more so than is to be found in most towns o f our size. There are not many homes in Dallas but what, are supplied with the daily and weekly papers and the be3t of all daises of literature. There are no homes visited that are particularly blighted by poverty, in fact Dallas has an ideal citizenship, and a vote on this question may be considered as a refiex of what the opinion would be in the same proportion among the very best communities in America. The Itemizer is gratified that its opinion in the matter has been so thoroughly verified, and to find that our women do not care to taint themselves with jiolitics. If the vote of the women themselves had shown a majority in favor of women suffrage, it would just as cheerfully acqui esced, as while we do not believe but that it is best to leave the voting to the sterner sex. yet if we are really made to see that they desire such a franchise, we would not place a straw in the way o f their receiving it. If the wonen really want to take hand in the nasty game, we will raise no objections, but we do not class a howl ing band o f suffragettei as the mouth pieces o f the mothers of the land not by a long «hot. i * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * T h e DALLAS TRANSFER DALLAS, OREGON PHONE zod ST A N D »t ▼.
