OUR CENSUS.
Wireless to Polk County Item
izer, April 3rd, 1912: The steam
er Moran which left Honolulu on
the evening o f Friday, March
29th, bound for Seattle, was
wrecked in the Pacific this morn
ing at 10 o ’clock. Shortly after;
the wreck, the German steamer
Frankmau, bound for Seattle a l- 1
so came up with the disabled
Moran, and commenced the res
cue of the few persons that were
not killed instantly in the wreck.
T!\e wreck was caused by an
explosion. So the officers of the
Frankmau were informed by res
cued persons. It is the general be
lief that a drunken sailor dropped
a lighted match into a gasolene
tank, and the explosion followed.
The explosion occurred in the
hold o f the vessel. Nearly the
whole side o f the vessel
blown out. It is a miracle that
it remained above water ten min
utes after the shock, but it did.
Hardly had the rescue o f ten
persons been effected, when the
big steamer sank. Besides a big
cargo o f rice that the Moran was
carrying, it was also carrying a
light cargo of liquors. These
liquors were broken into last ev
ening by the sailors, and during
all o f last night, terror reigned
on board.
Before the arrival o f the Frank
mau upon the scene o f the disas-
aster, two boat-loads o f passen
gers left the illfated steamer,
and up to this time no account of
them has been received. Unless
a storm should come up, it is be
lieved that the people in these
boats will eventually be picked
up by some steamer. ‘ ‘Mooch
Mooch,” th e m u c h heralded
freak was no where to be found.
It is believed that it, with its
keeper, got away in one o f the
life boats, though there is no
certainty about it. Though the
officers of the Frankmau are in-
dined to be optimistic regarding
the safety o f this Chinese Won
der, still there is a feeling on
board this boat that this myster
ious puzzle from the wilds o f
China will never reach its desti
nation. We are in wireless com
munication with a number of
other boats, and news o f the dis
aster has been spread far and
wide. We have instructed every
boat with which we have been in
communication to at once notify
the carnival management at Dal
las in the event “ Mook Mook” is
picked up; have instructed them
also to notify the Smithsonian In
stitute.
Captain ‘ ‘Bill” Ramey, one of
the best known officers traveling
the Pacific, and who was in com
mand of the Moran, was killed
instantly by the explosion which
wrecked his vessel. His body
was recovered and a fitting sea
burial given it.
The news of the wreck o f the
Moran, and the disappearance o f
“ Mooch Mooch” created quite a
stir in Dallas yesterday. The
big carnival is to come off on the
18, 19. 20 o f this month, and
‘ Mooch Mooch” is expected to
make the stellar attraction at this
much looked for show. Watch
tlv; bulletin board at the Item zer
office for further particulars.
We were able to slide in a day
or two this week and close up
our census o f Dallas’ population.
We find the .result was not
what was anticipated by many,
who went to the extreme o f be
lieving that we shouid have 2500
>r over. This the Itemizer has
'ound to be a mistaken notion.
Our population has increased
since the government census, but
in nothing like the ratio expect
ed by many in view o f the new
houses erected, births, new com
ers, etc. It takes a goodly num
ber of . new houses of average
population to add 100 residents
to a city. The Itemizer has ta
ken this population block by
block, house by house, resident
by resident, so there can be no
mistake in the outcome.
We now have each block plat
ted and it is our purpose to as
soon as a new house is built add
it to the plat and thus keep track
of any increase that may come to
town in the future, going over
the ground thoroughly once each
year and checking up and an
nouncing the result, thus keep
ing in close touch with our growth
and knowing to a certainty just
how we stand for population.
The population o f Dallas now
is 2362.
