SILENCE GOLDEN-POL1TICLLY ESPECIALLY. That the man who ever expects to aspire to political honors cannot keep to close tab on his Breaking appara tus has been sufficiently demonstated during the last week in the case of one o f the democratic aspirants for the presidency, and republican papers all over the land are endeavoring to make great capital over the lapse of the learned gentleman. Our country would be full o f statesman today, or so they might be termed, had they but the capacity of withholding their comments upon events at inoportune times -t o themselves - o r remarks about those whom they may be working with or against. This fault o f running off at the mouth has lost many a man an honor that he coveted, and some o f them the presidential chair. Probably, also, an honor for which they had all the ability and every requisite, except the one failing o f not knowing when to keep silent, thus making remarks that set the masses against them suffic ient to lose them the votes they wanted and lost them the coveted job. The astute politician invariably lets the other fellows do the talking, and keeps his tongue behind his teeth and makes the proper deductions to lead him to success. But seldom is he found occupying the offices, however, as he finds it more remunerative to be the power behind the throne, knowing full well that should he put himself too much in the limelight, he too, might be guilty o f the same indiscretion of babbling that oftimes loses him his game in putting some one in to office. The Itemizer espoused the cause of Woodrow Wilson as the right can fidate for the democratic nomination for several reasons, chief o f which was that we thought him entirely untainted with politics—a pure, clean, man o f good common sense, tempered with enough business ability to be able to engineer our government through all its devious meandering^ of a four years’ term with credit to himself and for the good o f the whole country. As yet we have had no occasion to alter that belief. Take a man o f scholastic temperament, entirely unused to the many disquieting things that may come up in a campaign o f this nature, he is certain to say and do things that may be a cause for regret, both to himself and to his friends, in fact anything else could hardly be expected. Further experience along such lines will give him riper wisdom, and we hardly think that he will care to repeat the indiscretions attributed to him by the late dispatches. All men are prone to error, even the nobl est that we have yet had in the government of this great country o f ours, and as a seeker after the best man for the place that we think can be found, we de precate the notoriety that has been given to a few chance words, although such was only to be expected when politics enters the field. We believe Governor Wilson to be clean cut in every particular, aman of good ideas for the betterment o f the country, and fearless enough to do what he can to see them carried out, no matter what the opposition. If we did not, we would not pose as champion of his candidacy, our great desire being to see the best man get the seat at the next elec tion, no matter what may be his politics, provided that he is not tainted with political or interest subserviency.
