Mr C. C. L«e, of M o n m o n th , is visit
ing his d a u g h t e r , Mrs. Ciiariie Tate.
Our grocers inform us this week that the local apples
are entirely out of the market, and have been for some
time. The apples we are eating are being shipped in
from Hood River, and we are paying $1.85 a box for
them, or in small quantities we get four for a nickel.
Those we have seen are nothing to brag on either—in
fact we should not care to eat one, but some of us have
to have to have an apple now and then during the win
ter, or we think we would perish. Of course these ap
ples are up to Hood River’s reputation, inasmuch as
they are wrapped up in tissue paper and are free from
imperfections and worms, but are hard and tasteless.
That Polk county, the natural home of good flavored
and perfect apples, should this early in the season have
her local supply entirely exhausted, is not saying much
for the orchard work we have been bragging on so
much. While it is true that our young orchards have
not yet come into bearing, it is surprising that our reno
vated old orchards are not sufficient to supply any local
demand that might occur during the entire season. In
one or two years from now there will probably be an
abundant supply of all varieties, and at a price where
the averaged incomed person can avail himself of their
juicy flavor, but that does not help us in the present in
stance. Polk county should be shipping apples to less
favored sections, rather than having to bring them in
to put in our own mouths. We want to be sending out
the goods and bringing in the money to reach the acme
of progress and financial prosperity. The quicker we
get to doing so the better for us all. The same is true
of many other things, such as butler, eggs, etc.
The Itemizer is here to commend the action of our
city council in deciding to put the Carnegie library on
the site now owned by the city, and not purchase addi
tional land on which to erect it. No more convenient
or sightly place could be found for the erection of such
a building than the corner opposite the Gail hotel, and
for the city in the present state of her finances to go
to the additional expense of buying another site was
not a good idea. It is true that before many years a
new city hall will be needed to keep up with the growth
of our city, but on Railroad street will be left plenty of
room for such an edifice, providing it is put to a proper
height. The city now owns sufficient land for all her
needs in the future, and the location could not possibly
be improved upon,
Despite the fact that another town only 25 miles
away was holding a chicken show at the same time, Dal
las had by considerable the best chicken show she has
ever held. There were more birds, nearly 300 in all, and
the quality was considerably above the average shown,
fully demonstrating that such meetings tend toward im
provement in the flocks of both the experienced bird
fancier, and those who are comparatively new at the
business. Those having the best birds on exhibition
found a ready sale for all they wanted to dispose of,
many of them going to persons who live in other and
remote counties.
Progress is being made in the campaign to interest
children in agricultural education in Oregon. State
Superintendent Aide-man is sending out letters to breed
ers and producers of the state asking for prizes to be
awarded to school pupils who will make the boot exhib
its of farm products at the fairs next fall. C. D. Nairn,
of Amity, has been the first to respond and he will give
a thoroughbred Scotch collie as a first prize for an ex
hibit of vegetables, corn, etc., at the state fair.
