M. M. F ills bad been g a t h e r e d by the
grim reap er to join his forebears in th e
heavenly land above.
For nearly 30
y ears t h e w riter had kn o w n a n d re
spected Micheál Ellis as on of o u r clos
es t an d most i n t i m a t e friends, having
first m a d e his a c q u ain tan ce when he
wa* engaged in selling <>ut a stock of
m erch an d ise in Salem an d we were g e t
ting o u t t h e Capitol Democrat.
At
t h a t tim e he th o ro u g h ly im pre ssed u*
as a man whom it would do to tie to,
an d in t h e af ter years we have never
had cause to ch an g e o ur first formed
opinion of his ch a r a c te r . H e was a
man to whom t h e giving of aid to his
b rother m an was pleasure, a n d hi* able j
life has been sp e n t in doing so. I t is a
fact t h a t Mitch would h ave passed away
wor th th o u san d * of dollars, w here he
was h u n d red s, if It h ad n o t been for
th is noble t r a i t in his ch a r a c te r . H u n
d r ed s of people t h ere a r e y et in Polk
o o u n ty who can testify to t h e fact t h a t
he has co m e forward a t critical tim es in
t h e i r financial p ath w ay , a n d m any
tim es vo luntarily, w ith o u t even th e as k
ing, given th e m t h e aid needed to tide
th em over u n til such t im e a* they could
repay h i m tor credit given or money
loaned. T h a t he would m an y times
lose in th is su b lim e t r u s t of his fellow
man i* b u t t h e way of t h e world, h u t
he never kicked, even th o u g h soVne-
tim es reviled by t h e very person s whom
he had so greatly assisted. A more I
straig h tfo rw ard ami ho nest m an never |
lived—his word was as good a* his bond
with those who knew hi m , a n d his d eath
will leave a void in t h e business, social
an d ch u rch circles of Dallas t h a t it will
tak e years to fill. His last m o n th s of
life were m ark ed by day* an d nights of I
su p rem e agony, cause« by t h a t dread !

with fortitude of a stoic, an d never al
lowed a w h im p e r to go forth a b o u t th e
hard n ess of his lot. He leaves to m ourn
hi* loss a devoted h elp m eet, a n d m any
o th e r relatives, t h e union never being
blessed with children.

M. M. Ellis w as born in Ohio in 1845,
h u t wa* reareo in t h e s t a te of Iowa,
w here h e was t ak en by hi* p a r e n ts when
q u i t e voting. In 1865 he c« m e to O re
gon with hts p aren ts, settlin g in Y a m
hill co u n ty , w h ere he was e d m ’atMd a t
McMinnville college, after which he
t a u g h t school. In 1868 he clerked in a
store in P o rtla n d , h u t set u p in business
for him se lf in Polk co unty in 1870, mov
ing to Dallas in 1874, t a k in g a half i n
terest in t h e firm of J . T. Wortley, with
whom he remain*«! for two ye ars. In
1878 he wa* elected county clerk an d
again in 1880 In 1883 he again went
in to t h e m e r c h a n d i e bu siness In re, an d
has nea» y ever since been engaged
t h e r e a t , until lately lieing a m e m b e r of
t h e firm of th e Dallas Mercantile c o m
pany . He was a p resident of t h e Dallas
Citv h an k for a n u m b e r of year* u n til
his o t h e r in terests took u p so m uch of
hi* t im e t h a t he left it t o y o u n g er head*
