THE POLK COUNTY ITEMIZER. Admitted to the second elans of mail matter. THURSDAY, DEC. 29, 1910. Yet 1910 has done its part and done it well. It has given to each of us 365 days, each day full of opportun ities. Maybe we have let these opportunities slip away from us, but if we have, we should accept the blame which belongs to us and not try to make the old year the goat. What have we done for ourselves? It is worth while asking that question, and studying out the answer. For there is a new year before us with new opportuni ties and for many of us the privilege is still open to re pair the neglect of the past. If, during the year, we have come to a realization of a few of our own short comings, even though we have taken no steps toward correcting them, we have ac complished in this one cycle of the seasons all that any one is likely to accomplish in an equal period of time. Do not fail to speak a good word when you can. The Itemizer believes that it would be money well and judiciously expended for the city to lake up Mayor Eakin’s suggestion, and have a recount of the city’s population. Everyone is satisfied that we have at least a population of 2500, and it should be known to the world if we have. For the department to assert that we have not grown over 100 since the census taken by the Observer some three years ago is absurd. This Mr. Hayter informed us Monday evening was considerably in excess of 2000. And he was very conservative in the count, being sure to count none who were not actual residents. Anyone who will go to one of our hilltops and look over the city will at once be impressed with the idea that we have grown wonderfully during the last year. The new houses are there to be seen, and you will find very few empty old ones in the entire city. Another thing, the school census proves conclusively that we have more than the number of inhabitants given us. When you get out in the country the popula tion falls off awful fast, and the bulk of that 3700 must come from the town, remembering also that there is quite a goodly portion of town population that is not in cluded in this census. We are not saying anything here against the work done by our enumerators, but they will tell you that many were missed in the length of time it took them to go over the ground. The city can do the work in a few days, at small expense, and by the employment of men already conversant with the popu lation see to it that we get what is coming to us. No one is satisfied now, and will not be until it is definitely proven that the department is anywhere near the mark. It has already been proven that they have seen fit to cut us down 145 from what our enumerators gave in. As to their reasons for doing that, no one has an idea. Give us a recount. FARM ERS A.\l> DIRECT TAXATIO N. The thousand Canadian farmers assembled in Otta wa adopted this resolution: The farmers of this country are willing to face direct taxation in such form as may be advisable to make up the revenue loss under new tariff relations. The "new tariff relations" which the Canadian far mers seek include reciprocal free trade between Canada and the United states in farm tools, produce, supplies, oils, fuel and lumber, and the gradual removal of the preferential tariff with Great Britain. For our part of this programme we know of no reason which requires tariffs between Canada and New York more than tariffs between New York and Pennsylvania. Gov. Odell abolished direct for indirect and unfelt taxation in the state of New York; the result has been a swift growth in extravagance. The Federal tariff yields our government indirectly most of its revenue; thereby extravagance thrives and manufacturing trusts are enriched. Direct taxation is the cheapest to pay because its payment is felt. It is the most economical to expend because its use is jealously watched. The Canadian farmers seem to be finding it out World. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOURSELF 1 It is not a question of what the old year has done for you, but what you have done for yourself during the period. 1810 has done its part. It has worn itself out in the service of the universe; and, being worn out it is per mitted to slip unobtrusively away, up the stairs into the attic of the ages and take its place among the other musty things which have outlived their usefulness. Its exit is of no interest to us. Our eyes see only the newcomer; and we are too busy greeting the new with loud ringing of bells, burning of powder and other signs of rejoicing to note the quiet departure of the old.
