STOVER GASOLINE ENGINE, Always in Stock.
The Stover Engine is a fourcycle, hit and miss type. The governor being connected
to the fly-wheel of engine, requires no gears or belt. The governor automatically regu
lates the supply of gasoline and the arrangement of the governor in the wheel is so thafc
it is not connected with a catch which operates direct on the exhaust valve, holding
same in an open position and not allowing the engine to feed gasoline when the speed
of the engine increases above normal. By the action of the governor in opening the
exhaust valve the compression in the cylinder is entirely released, freeing the engine
from friction and resistance which would otherwise be caused if this compression was
not released. This operation is a delicate one and must be performed at the proper
time in order to get the most power out of an engine. Bearings are extra long and
lined with the best high speed metal, designed for severe service. All side box bearing
commonly called pillow blocks are adjustable in all sizes of engines from 2 to 40-horse,
which is not the case in many so-called high grade engines.
I w w w w
w w w w w w w w w w w w w w m
In the Stover Engine the gasoline is admitted direct into the cylinder with the re
quired amount of air necessary to form a perfect combustible mixture and as the mix
ture is admitted without the use of auxilliary valves or chambers, it lessens complica
tions in the manufacture of the engine and the manner in which the mixture is admit
ted also has been proved to give better results, that is, great power with small fuel
consumption. All sizes of engines are operated at a slow speed. We could increase
the advertised power by increasing the speed, but the high speed used by other manu
facturers is not calculated to increase the durability of the engine. Slow speed gaso
line engines will develope more power on the same amount of gasoline for the reason
that it allows the cylinder to hold the charge longer after it has exploded, or in other
words, permits of greater expansion. High-speed gasoline engines, as used in launch
es and automobiles, consume a great deal more gasoline, developing same horse pow
er, than do the Stover engines.
