ORECON The front end of tbe huge Spaulding log drive from the McKenzie is approach ing this place, stray logs having been g«>ing by for the past lew days. The main portion of the drive now lies be-1 tween Buena Vista and Albany, the rear end of it having passed the latter city, A big body of men and several teams are" required to bring the logs down the river, t is said that this drive is the biggest one ever brought I down the river. It is a little earlier in j going down this year than last. Logs | from it will be left at the mill here and j at Salem, the remaining portion being i taken on to New berg. The meeting of citizens of tbe town and residents across the river to the number of about 25 was held yesterday afternoon at tbe city ball to discuss the subject as to purchase of tbe present ferry or to construct a new one. Tbe probable cost of a new ferry was discuss ed at length and a vote was taken as to the offer to make for the present ferry. The 2!l votes resulted in sums ranging from $500 to $1500, the average being | $785. Tn view of the fact that Mr. Jones had operated the ferry for many years, the first part of the. period being un profitable, it was tbe sense of the meet ing to make a fair offer and a motion finally prevailed to submit an offer of $800 and a committee was named to I make tbe offer. An improvement is soon to be made at the sawmill yards that will greatly i facilitate operations there. A switch is to be laid along the river bed north from tbe spur to the gravel pit. The track will be laid near the river in a po sition to permit logs to be dumped into tbe river for use at tbe mill, also the laying of the tract will make loading of | the lumber much more convenient than j it lias been heretofore. Tbe improve ment will permit of logs being delivered at tlie mill all the year round for when delivery by the river fails logs can be I brought in by rail. Such an arrange ment assures a more constant supply of logs and permanent operation of the mill should a demand for the product be liad. PORTLAND HOTEL ARRIVALS. Sunday ; Win.
