The South Bound Corvallis Passenger Jumps the Track. Several Polk County People Injured. But None Seriously. Friday morning an the regular Corvallis passenger train was coming up from Portland at alxmt 11 o ’clock in the morning the whole train left the tiack nearly midway l>etween Amity and McCoy on Theodore Jeffrey’ s farm. At this point the engineer tries to make up some of the time lost before, and they sprint along at a pretty go«*! gait for an Oregon train. There was a ditch at the scene of the at:- ci lent, and these three passenger coaches, mail and express cars were uncere moniously dumped into some four feet of water. The Amity Times says of the cause of the disaster: “ The track was in poor condition, the road-l>ed soft and ties rotten, allowing the rails to spread, dumping three coaches with their pas sengers down an embankment of four feet into the water. The mail and baggage ear also went into the ditch and the mail was badly damaged, being water-soak ed.” The daily Portland papers can give no reason for the train leaving the track. For a time the passengers were in a state of great consternation, being so uncere moniously dumped into a ditch with water in the car, they hardly knew what to expect next, supposing they might be burned up or drowned like rats in a hole. How they escaped worse injuries and that there were no fatalities is truly some thing wonderful. Wrecking trains were soon at hand, and Mr. Gorsline, of Mc Coy, who was in to see us Saturday, says the Monmouth motor went down and took the passengers on to Corvallis. Mr. Albert Baxter, of near Dallas, who was on the train, together with his wife and his wife’s mother, was very much shaken up, and the two ladies were considerably injured. Mr. J. T. Huntley, o f Independence, h*d his right arm hurt, and nearly all the trainmen were bruised up, but so far as we have heard no bones were broken, which is surely miraculous, wheif you consider the way in which the cars were hurled and turned over.
