“ The man under observation refused
all offers o f treatment,” says the Jour­
nal des Debats, “ hut notwitbstan ’ Ing

erage health. He commenced drink in u

ration was tw o quarts o f wine with

glasses o f brandy, rum, vermouth, ab­
sinth, etc. Ordinarily the man was
quiet, but when he had taken more
absinth than usual he became violent,
abused his w ife, broke everything with­
in reach and surrendered completely to
his frenzy. The day follow in g this de­
lirium the man remembered nothing,
but when told o f what he had done hr
wept, promised to become sober, etc.
The scenes, however, were soon re
pealed.
“ Dr. Fare* decided to try, with the
approval o f the furnily o f the patient
suggestion during natural sleep. The
treatment took place four or five times
j>or week, and, although the patient
«lid not know what was going ©u, there
was slow and steady improvement
The treatment commenced in January
Up to April the man had been Intoxi
cated only three times. In Ap ril and
May there were no acts o f violence; in
June and July slight intoxications on
tw o occasions; in August and Septem-

“ Returning to Paris, the man did not
go to a cafe, but drank a little absinth
and less than a quart o f w ine for all of

The Vienna Medical society has
gathered statistics as to the relation
o f alcohol to crime and comes to the
conclusion that «rim e increases in
proportion to the Increased consump­
tion o f alcoholic beverages. H ere are
the figures; On Monday when numer­
ous small artisans and workmen In
Europe “ make blue” —that Is, refuse to
work, spending tbe day in saloons—the
number o f crimes reported to the V i­
enna police was 125; on Tuesday,
when almost everybody works, the re­

crimes on the average are reported

due, the doctors say, to overindulgence
