T h e coa; o f road budtbug varies iu the different p.aces according to the topography o f the country ami the proxim ity o f the atone used, «uya Franklin M atthews in Outing. A aat- lafactory highway can be built eighteen feet wide, exclusively o f stone, usually fo r $3,000 to $3.500 a mile. These are know n us macadam roads. A more costly stone road, running from $4,000 to $0,000 a mile, Is the tel ford road. Both aro named after Scotchmen, who first devised the sys tems. T h e macadam road consists o f a deep foundation o f large stones, laid as smoothly together as possible, the foundation stones being o f a nearly uniform size. A layer o f small stones is placed over the foundation and roll ed down, l .»d in g the tw o together. Then layers of crushed stone, each lay er 1 icing o f finer quality than Its prede cessor, are rolled Into and over the foundations. The final layer is o f very fine crushed stone. The whole settles Itself -into a compact mass, almost as smooth as a flagstone, from which w a ter runs off as soon as It falls. T h e tel ford road Is more expensive because its foundation is laid with more care. The foundation stones are o f a uniform size and are laid with the ends uppermost, like so many bricks set upon edge. These are bound to gether by smaller sizes of stone, the various dressings o f finer stone being laid and rolled in the same w a y as for the macadam roads. The durability of such a highway is unquestionably longer than any other kind o f road known. O ar D e fe c tiv e C o u n try llo t u d fi. The amount o f time saved in the do mestic commerce over and above that now expended on highways impassable or nearly Impasaable many w eek « in the year w ill go fa r toward educating the people o f the United States. It is estimated that every time the sun sets the people o f the United State», by reason o f the defective country roads, have lost more than $1,500,000. The internal commerce o f the country amounts to $20.000.000,000, which is equal to the international commerce o f the world. The agricultural products make over 62 per cent o f this, thus swelling the commerce o f the country more than all other products combined. N early all o f this vast traffic has to pass over public roads to reach the railroad stations, w aterways or mar kers. _____ A WORKING TOOL X- b d l. f iL L S W h a t is C A S T O R I A O a s t o r ia in a h a r m le s s s u b s t it u t e for C a s t o r O il, P a r e g o r ic , D r o p s a n d H u o tliin g S y r u p s .
