T h e democratic candidates and central committeemen met here Tuesday
and retained J. W. Kirkland and Oscar Hayter as chairman and secretary
1'hen they talked of the best means of conducting the canvas, the prevailing
sentiment being against public meetings. All hands insist upon a quiet,
clean campaign. Dwelling on the merits of our own men rather than the
diortcomings of the op(>ositioii. No lack of unity was reported in any qnar
ter. The ticket seems to suit the whole party and many who are not demo
crats have expressed an intention to vote for some of them on merit. That
the republicans cannot truthfully pick flaws in any of our candidates in gen
erally believed.
The republican candidates met at Independence Saturday to consult about
their mutual interests and decide upon a course of action. The West Side
says they should go before ihe public an I tell what they stand for and asst-il
that the still hunter has had his day. The observation and experience of the
public baa been that campaign promises arc not worth very much. The pasi
life and reputation of or.r democratic candidates are the best possible evidence
of what might he expected of them as officials. 'Hie party is perfectly satis
fled tiiai they shall he judged by what they have done rather than what they
might promise to do.
