C O L D E M D A L E R E V IS IT E D In the summer of 1879 w»* crossed the Columbia river at The Dalles ami wi nt by stage thirty miles over a mountain and through a beautiful, open bunc h grass valley to the pretty village above named. Then then? were not oxer 500 people the e ami about 3,000 in all Klickitat county We passed six years in that midst as principal uf Goldendale academy,Sun day school superintendent and in edi torial burro**, baring originated tlae Golden dale Gaxette. We knew every man, woman and child in the town and a irajority in the county, having repeatedly made trips through the country in all directions. Most of the land was then unfenced and bands of horses and cattle ranged everywhere, before leaving in 1885 we saw the population increase to 4,000 and mul tiplied changes on all sides. After eighteen years absence we again drop ped down* there ten days ag >. The town had trebled its population ami there were twice as uiaoy people in the country." Where we once knew everybody most were now strangers, but a more cordial welcome greeting unsoul over received anywhere. The question was not wliero could we stay but which ones of the many invita tions to accept. Many of our school boys and girls had families and want ed us to see their attractive children, and the mothers and fathers now grown gray made us feel very pleas- rnt at their homes. Some years ago the towu was distroyed by fire but lias l»een rebuilt in better shape than before. Some elegant buildings are going up and the merchants are pros periug. One firm has sold over #100,- 000 worth of goods during the past year. All good land has been fenced and hut little slock runs at large. Many new people are settling in all parts of the county, and there is a steady ircreate in values. The chief lumbering timbers are yellow fir ami white pine, there being a vast amount of it back in the mountains. Its price has almost doubled within a few year?. Considerable of the country is rough but all that is susceptible of cultiva tion yield abundant crops of grain. The winds that sweep down from the everlasting snows of Ml Adams, make it cooler and more windy than in the Willamette valley. The face of the country is entirely dissimilar to that of Polk county. John Golden, the founder ' f Goldendale, was married at Airlie in this county in 1859 to Miss Jane Parrott, whose father was Un original owner of the bagley place. He and wife st’ll live there but her father is dead. Our readers have all rjad about the recent building of a forty mile railroad from Goldendale to Lyle at the mouth of the Big Klicki tat river. Half of the road is through a c imperatively level country and the balance through deep canyons, great gorges and close to the edge of a swift ly flowing stream of good size Tin- scenery is simply grand. The road bed is as solid and the trains make as good time as though constructed ten years ago. It gives a rail and wa ter outlet to an immense region of country and will pay big. Bonts leave Portland every morning at 7 o'clock, reaching Lyle at 5 o ’clock and the train at once starts on a 2.J hours run to Goldendale. One leaves there at 7 in the morning and is landed at Port land within 12 hours. Mrs. Wa*di and Eva went with us up the Colum bifton the excursion boat Gatzert to the Cascade locks and returned that evening to the Chautauqua meeting at Gladstone Park. The writer trans ferred to another boat within the locks 'lhe scenery in that region is consul ered the finest on earth. At Collin* hot springs landing some distance above the locks Mrs. l)r. Farley told us that the medical waters were help ing her husband. A number of rheu matic sufferer« left the boat a few miles faither down to try the virtues of 8 t Martin's hot springs. ------- -------------- C oun ty 8 c h o o l R eport.
