Nine o’clock one m orning found ns a t the old Fawk place this side of Ko la Mr. Germ an, who bought it of Henry Fawk about a year ago, had just sold it to C. A. Guiser from Oiym pia, Washington. T aking the roud north a t th e Brunk farm we found the new proprietor, W. 11 Kttower, u> charge of the place so long occupied bv Billie Smith, who has moved to W as h tu c n a The home of Mrs. J. C. Allen was just ahead, but we turned to the west and tarried for an inter view on the farm which Itavis Allen had sold to Albert Zielesch from the east. The homes of his brothers, J W. Allen and I. A. Allen, were in sight and so were pretty grain fields, orchards and hop patches, but on we went by the home of J. W. Lewis and the two Fawk places, hailing at the old Morris place, which the huge tir trees showed to have been settled a long time ago, J. K. Allen now abides where Allan Rogers formerly lived. J u s t yonder are the h unes of J. C W hite and A. G. Roberts, but we had not time to visit e ith e r. W hen mid day came our horse was m u n ch in g oats and we enjoying the hospitality of 8 . K. Crewley and wife in the im mense fir grove set o ut by Mr. Good win nearly 50 years ago. Her father, Ja m es Fulkerson, crossed the plains in 1847 and he cam e in 1852, both settling near O.ikgrove. Lack of space prevents mention of m any in teresting things seen and heard on this trip. A solitary chim ney now m arks the place where the elegant home of F r a n k Seeley stood not m any weeks ago on the 8 'evens place, but the great red barn is still there. And, too, there is a vacant lot where the home of A Heiso was recently burn ed. E v erything seemed thrifty about the Harris and McNary homes and ne ighboring hop yards are thrifty P. B Miller has bought of H e nry l a l k the part of the old Richards place we-t of the road and is improving it Mr Simons occupies th e old George Eileis house ami Gus Larsen lives in tin newer one across the road. J a s . Ball is ru n n in g the 8 . W Fletcher farm, Oliver W ait the G. C. Bell place, and R. L Wllliam-o 1 th a t of J. P. E m m ett. Crops of all kinds looked well, stock was plentiful and in go id condi tion. George K 'l t y 's new hom e is quite attractive and so is the Bethel cemetery, Forty years ago Bethel w> quite an im porta nt place, but most of its glory has departed. Now there i- ne ither a store, postoffice, r even a blacksmith shop there, a nd most of the property around has changed hands. (Jurt. Hawley lives at his fa thers place, and the homes at which we met Uncle Charlie Graves and Lit cien Frazer 15 years ago are now oc cupied by H. W alker and George A Shields and J o h n Moore lives where Glend Graves then lived. The Win ners have moved to near Salem, being succeeded by 0 . W. Dancer, and W. F. Hartfield is the new owner of the old Maguire place. Here we are w t h in a stone's throw of the Yamhill county line, and just over the m oun tain to the east is tho old George Gay brick house, which was the starting point of the division lino betweeu the two counties. T aking the lane roti ■ling wevt by the homes of 8 . T. Man kers and W. H. W erner on the Fred Sm ith place, we found Ja ck McKee ami family fixing for the Ballston pic nic and 8 . L. Stewart a nd family for an e n te r ta in m e n t at Amity. Oppo site the homo of Stanley Fletcher w> turned in at a gate to spend the rigl t with J. A. Buttrick and family on the Elder Richardsou farm, Mrs. Buttrick having been Miss Lizzie Richardson T h e grove of big walnut trees gave ev idioms of its early settlement. Both evening and m orning Mr. Buttrick was shooting birds from his cherry trees, hut the fruit was too tempting for them to stay away. Passing the new home being built by Mi Rohde we drew rein for a pleasant c h a t with Then. Jefirius on his fath er’s old home lace. George Rioliardanu is his neigh or on the south. At the hom e of J J. Finn we tarried (or a talk with Mrs. F in n about her sons, Capta in Milton Davis and Lioiitenaht Dick Davis, both of whom have prom inent posh tions in the regular array.
