W . Deacon, of 8 h n dan. brought his daughter, A n n a, here last summer, b it she was too tar gone with consumption an 1 passed away in October. This city and Salt river valley are a great hos pital during the winter nnfnth«. N o One who has not lived at a health re sort can im agine the am ount of grief here, there being continual sickne*» and death on all sides. Home are benefited by com ing, hut noi so with the m ajority M an y« p iss away in a abort tim e after their arrival, while others lin ger on for mouths and may be years. T o be beuefited by this cli m ate one must com e in the first sta g> s of a dise ase and not wait until about ready to drop into the grave as many do. Our sunshine is a great help to weak lungs if one only comes in time. Last w ist r was much war mer than the present one. W e have been having some frosty nights and cool days, blit a fire is seldon needed at the m iddle of the day. Since Oc tuber there has been m ote min than w ithin a year previous to that time. Bo much water has made the crop prospects flattering. T u e governm ent may build an im m ense storage reser voir a l the headwaters of Salt river. T h a t would insure an abundance of w ter at all seasons. This valley would be beautiful if well supplied with wa ter W ith in one season they harvest four or five ciops of alfalfa, eaen crop m aking over a ton to the acre. Not much wheat or oats is raised and gar den truck does well in only special localities. T h e first crop of alfalfa is harvested in Ap ril and grain is th edi- e«l in June. W h ea t now sells at two cents a pound and all kinds of fruit and vegetables are high. W e pay $1.80 for a sack of Hour and country board ranges from 97 to 910 a week. Groceries and dry goods are about the same as in Oregon, hut a ll kinds of meats are high. E ggs have been as liigb as 40 cents but are now down to 25, and butter costs from 25 to 50 cei ts. Furniture and hardware ere much higher than at home. T h e best grades of dressed lum ber go at $75 a 1000 and rough at 955. Simpson, who pointed out the liitrli ing posts to winch we should fasten the attention of pupils, and presented the subject in a thorough and interest in g manner. A grave and serious case of neglect in the care of the child of Frank Blan chard and wife is being investigated by the school hoard and som e of the prom inent citizens. T h e child is 8 years old and does not know an yth ing about the inside of a school house at;d if not kept oft' the streets will prob ably cause the arrest of the parent* for the neglect. Independence was granted a new charter by the last legislature and it is hoped that it will be more effective than the last one, which was in many respects defective. It. was established some 45 years ago by a Mr. Dane, who sold it to Charlie M cD onald and G eorge Stiles, the form er of whom afterward became sole proprietor, "and some 15 years ago he sold ou t to his brother Dave and Andrew Muir, who today own the plant. Each of the present firm has lived in Dallas over 50 years. They buy about all the hides in the county, • mounting to between 1,200 and 1, 5 X) a year. They pay h u 'c h e o 8 cents a pound for salted hides ami farmers 5 cents for green ones. T h e ir tannery force varies from four to six hands at differ« nt times of the year. They cure from 80 to 120 hides and ship about 200 sides a month to Portland ami San Francisco, the price of leath er ranging from 50 to 55 cents.
