farm er's cow Is a cow which belougs
to a farmer, and that Is about the only
general definition o f the term.
"A
farm er’s cow” is not any particular
breed o f cow or type o f cow. N ever
theless the expression has been so long
applied to uny sort o f cow that no one
else will have that It becomes sugges
tive o f a second rate scrub.
W hy
luch u cow should be dubbed a ‘‘ farm
er’s cow ” any more than some other
body’s cow is the result o f the notion
that the farm er only needs a cow that
will drop a big calf, give a little milk
a little while, then get fat and be
made Into had beef.
Scrubs o f all breed« have been found
proficient In this performance and sold
to farmers as dual purpose cows. It
does not follow that because a cow
belongs to a farm er she is a scrub, but
wheu you hear the expression "fa rm
er’s cow” a scrub comes to mind. It
is a misnomer. T h e farm er wants as
good a cow as any one else, and if
umong the various breeds he cannot
find a type to suit him we cannot ini-
ugine wbnt he wants. The farm er’s
cow should be a pure bred or a grade
o f some pure breed and, being a pure
bred. should be called by her breed
name. not lose her Identity and repu-
tation in the questionable epithet,
"fa rm er’s cow.”
W e notice that the managers o f a big
show contemplate offering a thousand
dollar prize for "fa rm er’s cows.” Just
what kind o f cow or what breed or
what type Is not stated—Just a "farm -
er’s cow,” as though a cow for a farm-
er must be selected from outside the
pedigree breeds which already have
i prize money. It is a backwoods no
tion. It has been fostered somewhat
I o f late under the dual purpose dis
guise, but the "fa rm er’s cow” has be
come a thing o f the past—and a bad
I [last. It is a backward step to encour
age the breeding o f scrubs and mon
grels by offering prizes on what arc
currently understood as ‘‘farm er’s

o f New Jersey at the Pennsylvania
dairy meeting. lie said lu part that
comparing forage crops on the ton ba
sis is erroneous, as frequently a crop
°F medium tonnage will show' more ae-
tual feeding value than one o f much
heavier tonnage. A t the N ew Jersey
station farm their first soiling crop in
spring Is rye sown thickly to get more
stalks and loaves. They begin cutting
rye just before It shows heads and
feed for eight to ten days. The rye
season can be somewhat extended by
making early, medium and late sow
ings, they having fed rye for twenty-
one days by this plan. R ye and wheat
for soiling are top dressed with ma-
pure or nitrogenous fertilizer,
Next afte r rye they begin to feed al-
falfa, starting on it from M ay 20 to the
end o f the mouth. This they regard as
one o f their best lorage crops, furnish-
ing nutrients most cheaply. When sow-
Ing a lfalfa, they use plenty o f seed,
have land rich and well prepared and
mow o ff weeds till a lfa lfa Is well estab-
lished. They have cut twenty-six and
one-half tons green a lfa lfa an acre In a
year.
When wheat is used for soiling. It is
cut Just before the blossoms ore falling,
as wheat hardens even more rapidly
than rye. W heat for soiling is seeding
thickly also, making more and better
feed than as sown for grain.
Their next soiling crop is crimson
clover, the cheapest they grow, as I» is
usually grow n as a catch crop with
corn, and its long feeding season makes
It especially desirable, they having used
it for eighteen or tw enty day«. Fol
lowing crimson clover, they use red
clover and mixed grasses. These are
susceptible o f great Improvement by
thick seeding, increasing the proportion
o f leaf to stem.
Corn follow s grass. By early plant
ing o f thoroughbred white flint they
are able to secure tw o crops o f corn In
the one season. It is their practice in
soiling to do no summer plowing. As
rapidly as one crop is' removed the
ground is prepared with disk or cuta
way harrow and given over to the next
crop. Cowpeas are a valuable soiling
crop, requiring no hurried harvesting.
¡«s they keep green and growing. Soy
beans have produced more dry matter
an acre than cowpeas.
O f the millets they esteem most high
ly the common barnyard, on account o f
its quICK growth. Sown a fte r wheat,
they have cut eleven tons an acre in fif
ty (lays.
For best feeding value it
should be cut just before heading.
K affir corn is sown with cowpeas or
soy beans, and of this mixture they
have cut tw elve and three-fifths tous nn
acre after having cut ten tons o f Can
ada peas aud oats. The great secret o f
successful practical soiling is to give
the cow enough. -Never allow her to go
hungry.
