terest to some. Most people living
ii, the w- stern part of Folk and Y a m
hill counties know som e thing of (he
Mill Creek country, hut perhaps not
m any of the present generation know
m uch of th e first establishm ent of th e
old landm ark once known us the Elk
H orn Mills, or s t it was usually call
ed, Buell’s Mill. Elias Buell located
the claim where March A Co’s saw
mill now ia in 1840. Up to t h a t time
the hand ol man had not m arred the
primeval forest. On the 18th of J u ly
work was commenced on a sawmill,
and on the 7th of September he mov
ed hit family to this claim from that
first located, which is now owned by
Mrs. Joi n Birks aud W. R. Mirks.
The frame for the mill was p u t in
during the su m m er a nd fall of 1840,
but the machinery had not yet been
put ill, which was fortunate, a t the
high water t h a t winter swept it away.
W ork was commenced on anoth er
building, which wits placed on higher
ground, b ut it wae not aompleted and
ready to run till March 1851. From
th a t time on for several years it made
most ot • he lumber used ia t h a t sec
tion, and continued to run until J a n
uary 2, 1863. when it was again des
troyed by high water, bejng with o t h
er driftwood lodged in the bend of the
bend of the creek about one mile be
low, where a large drift ataid for some
twenty years. T he water iu Mill
Creek al t h a t time was several feet
higher th a n has ever been known
since. I t was again rebuilt, and run
till a bout 1872 when it burned duwu
After a year or two^tbe place wae sold
to Hleppy A Sons, wbo built a n o th e r
mill which is still r u n n i n g , having
changed hands several times and is
now owned by March A Co. I u 1866
and 1867 m uch lum ber was taken
from the mill to F o r t Y’amhill, now
Grand Ronde. A com pany of soldiers
was stationed there, am ong them
Lieutenants Hazen, G r a n t a u d flheri-
dan, who afterward became noted gen
erals. Tbe old ageney buildings, es
pecially the block house, will be re
mem bered by all persons who have
passed there on the way to :he coast.
In 1863 ground was broken fur a grist
mill half a mile below the saw mill,
where Russell Jones now lives. This
was also built by Elias Buell. The
first work was excavating for the baee
m ent, and was done by Morris Jonea,
now of Dallas. Luce A Tem ple built
the frame fur the mill. Som etim e be
fore this A. H. Reynolds, a millwright
had sta rte d for the slates to get the
m achinery f o r a two ru n g r i s t m i l l.
He also got machinery for another
mill of the same kind for a Mr. Cham
tiers in Kings Valley. Mr. Reynold»
went to New York by way of Panam a
hut shipped his goods around the
Horn, it taking about a year for the
round d i p , or until J a n u a ry , 1854.
From P ortland it was ship|ied to D iy-
ton and then hauled to Mill creek,
where the mill was ready aud the dam
and race built. They com m enced to
grind wheat on the 16th of May, 1854
Although unlike modern milla, it was
an nptodate mill a t t h a t time. Dan.
Rowell was the first miller and m a n a
ger and made of it a gratifying finan
cial success. Its patronizing territory
was large, being nearly nil of Polk
and Yamhill counties. After Dan
Rowell rnn it for 4 or 5 years, Cyrus
liuall became miller and m anager
and finally owner of the grist mil and
saw mill. Boon after the grist mill
was sold, to R. H. Conner, who sold it
to Jss. Morrison, who moved it lo
Sheridan about 1880 or 81. After
th a t it c hanged hands several limes
and is now owned and r u n by the
Yamhill Miliing Co. These are the
namos of some the pioneers who dial
business with these mills from 1851
to 1861. T hey are taken from an old
account hvaik kept a t th a t tim e. A
