The western lamb trade is rapidly assuming mammoth proportions, and the present system o f rushing them Into the market by the train lqad de moralizes the trade and reduces the price tu the grower. These lambs are cheaply grown, as no expensive con centrated feeds are used far their de velopment. A fte r shearing or In the early part o f the summer the ewes and lambs are started for the moun tains, where the tender, succulent grasses, pure w ater and enjoyable shade contribute to the health and th rift o f the flock. The environments offered by these mountain ranges make them Ideal summer pastures for suck ling ewes; hence the lambs grown there are noted for the production o f typical carcasses o f Arm flesh. In tho early fa ll or late summer these lambs are brought out o f the mouutalus and shipped In large numbers to the mar kets o f the middle west, where they are either slaughtered at ouce or sent to feed yards to be carried o ver iu an ticipation o f better markets.—James W lthcom be, Oregon. THE SPO R TING W ORLD. A new motor to r automobiles Is be ing perfected by a N ew H aven machin ist who claims great tilings fo r It, says the Now York Mall and Express. In general It works on the same principle that a gas engine does, w hich Imparts pow er to the crank axle by successive explosions against the piston, this In turn being the w ay steam exerts Ita pow er In a reciprocating engine. In the New H aven motor Instead o f gas being exploded gunpowder is used, and It Is said that experiments enough have been rnnde to demonstrate the success o f this principle. The powder Is kept In u receptacle near the cylin der and Is fed to the Inttcr In small doses, just a limit the same as la the case In n cartridge filling machine. T h e motor makes about the same noise as though gas w ere used, but It Is said to be more easily managed and cheaper. Its cheapness lies In the fact that little pawder Is necessary to cause an explosion that gives the motor con siderable power. It Is claimed that ten pounds o f pow der Is sufficient to take the machine several hundred miles. Outside o f cheapness Iu operation Its feature la endurance. Journeys that aro uow looked upon us long for the aver- | nge automobile being nothing to this I one. This recommends It for army uses. It Is also said that the cylinder where the explosions take place does not get ns hot as when gas Is used, and It therefore does not need such an elaborate cooling apparatus.
