at the rate o f 7,000,000,000 feet annual­
ly, which they had six years later re­

duction in 1808, and it w ill take some
tim e to make up the difference o f
1,500,000,000 feet. The forests o f Mich­
igan and Wisconsin are uow so nearly
exhausted that they can never make it
up. aud the entire burden w ill rest on
the Duluth aud Minneapolis districts,
In Minnesota. For the next ten years
these tw o districts can probably pro­
duce as much pine as they are now

lost that orguu from cancer. The suf­
ferer had tried to couceal her disfig­
urement by wax noses, but rain and
sunshine pluyed havoc with them.
Rubber noses she found too heavy for
everyday wear, and, besides, they had
to be touched up frequently to keep
them presentable.

From plaster o f parls the artist mold­
ed a truly artistic nose, suitable to the
patient’s style o f face. Then she took
the cast to Maiden lane and bought
gold and had It carefu lly shaped after
the pattern.
By draw ing out very
finely the edges where the metal would
touch the flesh the lines o f contact,
when the nose was worn, were hardly
detectable. A pair o f spectacles fas­
tened to the nose held the nose In place.
Then came the most ticklish part o f
the work, the enameling.
The nose was re-euanieled 10 times
before the artist was satisfied that she
had matched exactly the woman's com­
plexion.
As the patient's skin was
dark and reddish and full o f color It
was difficult to imitate. Finally, how­
ever, when the nose was finished. It
was as natural as could be—darkest at
the roots, lightest at the bridge and on
the tip. and it rosé out o f the face in

bele wars and gained experience, honor

Kx-Senator Henry P. Dawes o f Mas­
sachusetts celebrated his eighty-third
birthday recently by entertaining the
Monday Evening club, a literary society,
at his home in Pittsfield. Mr. Dawes read
a paper on “ Tin* Duties and Functions
of the United States Senate.”
James 8. Galloway of Hillsdale, Mich.,
has just purchased the whole of Morgan
county, Out., BDVi square miles, for the
white pine timber upon it. He could cut
nearly if not quite 100 , 000,000 feet, but
intends to hold most of it, awaiting de­
velopments. lie paid $300,000.
Lieutenant Commander T. R. M. Ma­
son of the navy, who died a few days
ago, was baptized ns Theodoras Bailey
Myers, but he took the name of his moth­
er’s family. Mason, to heir the fortune
left by the family, the income of which
was between $40,000 and $50,4)00 a year.
Alfred J. Newton, the new lord mayor
