Sulphate of potash gave somewhat better results than chloride. German broadcloth and faced cloth ia dark jacqueminot red or the favorite silver blue shade* are noted among the elegant dress wraps. Finely twilled glace surahs giving the effect of satin come in a variety of pret ty plaids in cashmere colorings in nacre tints, in pin dots, stripes aud the all prevalentombres, changing like the beau tiful autumn foliage. A handsome expression of the ulster idea, made up on the other side, is of rough finished black cloth, each cape edged with persian lamb and lined with magenta silk. The broad rolling collar is also of the glossy black fur. Felt hats with double faced brims are the rage. A soft, velvety black felt with a white facing is one of the very popular styles, or one of cream white with a black fur felt facing, with trimmings of black and white satin ribbon and black Valkyrie wings.—New York Post. RAILROAD TIES. Ticket collector» have been taken off the Big Four passenger trains. Wiley Anderson of Nevada, Mo., is a mascot. He has been postal clerk for 12 years and has never been on a train where any one was hurt, even slightly. The West Virginia Central and Pitts burg road ia making an addition to its shops at Elkins, W. Va., that will in crease the capacity one-half. The build ing will be of brick aud will be fitted vrith modern machinery. The freight department of the New York, Lake Erie and Western has been reorganised, and several changes have occurred. The principal change made woe the abolition of the office of assistant general freight agent at Buffalo. A rule haa been made by the North Car olina railroad conimiaaioner* requiring that, when part of a consignment of freight is short, the railroad carrying it will not be permitted to demand chargee of the consignee beyond the portion de livered. A locomotive engineer can tell by the ear alone when his machine is out of or der. He becomes so familiar with it ordinary tone* that the moment a bol gets loose or any part of the machim goes wrong the note changes, and he a once looks for the difficulty.
