ALUMINIUM ROWING SHELLS. C«»il( a e C o n f»--t » Nt*xt Sprint: M ay lie l»«*- 4. (led In W ill to Itou t». Dani«l J. Oaluimtv.'U, the Philadelphia boatbuilder, is constructing the first t-oured rr.cin'jf shell ever built from slum ini tun metal. It is uit«*nded fo r th « use of the Cornell college crew and w ill b *1 finished .th® latter part o f March. Galanaugh is the first boat builder to cx- periment with aluminium in the con struction «jf racing shells. His iir-d ef fort was on a single scull shell for the us«* o f G« urge W. Statzell, commoilore of the Schuylkill navy anti ex-champion single sculler of the Schuylkill river. It is proved to be a very strong boat and boine four ptrnnds lighter than those con structed from any other material hith erto used. The shell was loaned to an oarsman who was entered at Newark, N. .J.. re gatta, and there Charles E. Courtney, tlie Cornell trainer, saw it. He was much taken With th«* new style o f shell ami urged its adoption so strongly and so persistently that the Cornell boating authorities finally appointed a com mittee to go to Plula«!«*lphia and inter view the maker. Galanaugh felt so positive that he could build a sliell at least ten seconds faster than the one constructed o f either j wiper or cedar that he agreed to take the risk o f building an eight at his own expense, and if it does not prove ten seconds faster than any other shell the crew can get they need not take it. The keel and the gunwale are now laid in liis shop on the banks o f the Schuylkill. The boat w ill 1*> 62 feet in length over all. 26 inch 's beam amid ships. inches deep amidships, 6 $ inches deep forward and .rH inches deep aft. The shell w ill l)° composed entirely of aluminium, with the exception o f the washbox. which w ill be o f wood and the outriggers, which w ill be o f steel tubing, cold drawn. The shell w ill weigh 175 pounds, all told. Ordinary paper and cedar shells weigh about 225 pounds, and Waters, tlie famous shell builder, of Troy. N. Y ., claims that u 200-pound 8 -oared shell is an exceedingly light one The aluminium sliell w ill b«> built in two pieces, being divided fore and aft and then joined together amidships. It is designed to carry an average weight of 175 pounds per man. The aluminium from which this shell is being made is one-twentieth o f an inch thick and weighs about seven ounces to the square foot. Galanaugh’s contract calls for the completion o f the Ixiat by the latter part o f March, when the Cor- aell crew w ill come to Philadelphia to try the shell on the Schuylkill. If ic is satisfactory Galanaugh w ill receive $500. The fact o f Cornell's ordering this shell has caused considerable comment in col lege boating circles, and H arvard intowls having one as soon as possible. A nuin- ber of oars nen from that college visite«! Philadelphia Saturday, the result ^of which was the ordering o f nil aluminium shell for the Harvard crew. Galanaugh has or«lers now for tw elve aluminium boats— tw o four oared, tw o eights, one double and seven single shells. One of the fours is for a Portland (O r.) club, and one o f the singles goes to the Narra- gansett club, o f Providence.—Plxiladel phia Record. DALLAS NURSKRY. Choice Trees at Fair Prices.
