The mean temperature for the month was 03.84 degrees. Highest daily mean temperature for iho mouth GO degrees, on the 26th. Lowest daily mean tempera ture (>1 degrees, on the 17th. Mean temperature for the month at 2 o’clock P. M. 75.81 degrees. Highest temperature for tho month 87 degrees at 2 o’clock P. M. on the 26th. Lowest temperatme 55 degrees, at 7 o’clock A. M. on the 10th. Tho prevailing winds for the month were from the north during 26 days, southwest 3 days, south 2 days. During August, 1882, there was 0.03 inches o f water fell, on the 23d, 27 clear and 3 cloudy days. Mean temperature for the month 63.21 degrees. Highest daily mean tempera ture for the month 74 degrees on the 30th. Lowest daily mean temperature for the month 53 degrees on the 25th. T. P e a r c e . Kola, .Sept. 1, 1883. l»arii belong ing to Mr. Andrew Baker, who lives on Muddy, in Yamhill county, with all its contents was entirely consumed by fire on last Saturday. The cause of the fire is not known, but it is supposed to be the result of careless smoking. A man who will deliberately light his pipe and smoke about a barn this dry weather ought to be sent to the penitentiary on general principles. The loss in this case is about 83,000 and no insurance. F ir e in Y a m h il l . — The A t th e P ortland B usiness C o l l e g e . — MarcuB E. Boyle, of Dixie, is now in the metropolis attending the Portland Business College. Two of his brothers, James and John, attended the same school last year. The school has an es tablished reputation for thorough work, and we learn of a number of young men from this county who will spend the com ing fall and winter there. W e are pleased to note this evidence of energy and ambi tion on the part of our young people, and believe that they will be greatly benefit ted by such a course.
