A few short years ago tho stillness of death, save for tho war cry of a few painted savages and the discord ant howling of tho panther and the prairie wolf, held universal empire over the vast west, stretching from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, and from the 49th parallel north to the Colorado river on the south. Scarcely a foot of the virgin soil had ever been broken by the plow in all this vast region, and but little was really known of its almost infinite susceptibilities for maintain ing civilized communities. States men stood in the halls of congress and talked learnedly of the endless resources of the United States as a home for the homeless and oppressed of every nation, and devised schemes for emigration to free America. Thus millions of foreigners were in duced and enabled to come to our shores, and receive a bonus of a tract of land, of their own selecting, for their paius, in conformity to our liberal land laws. Thus the star of civilized empire took its westward way, until to-day when we look for the public domain, the patrimony of our children, the future home of our children’s children, lo! it line van ished, and the question will soon be asked, whither next? That the gov ernment Inuds are virtually gone cannot be denied. W ith the present rapid increase of population, it will be but a short time in the future until tho whole American continent will be as densely populated as is continental Europe. Our country has made most wonderful progress because of her vast resources and facilities for progress. Men could move into the border of tho wilder ness, and in a few years seo untold wealth grow up, ns if by magic, around them. Hut tins growing process is soon to end, nud then the American pcoplo will begin to see how much of their natural patrimony has been frittered away. It is truo that a considerable portion of the public lauds has been given to cor porations and railroad companies in order to the inoro rapid development of the remainder. Whether this was wise or unwise tbo future only will reveal. That it has enabled the country to become great with greater rapidity is quite evident, but whether the ultimnte result will be beneficial or not is a problem bnrd to solve. One thing is quite evident to careful thinkers, nnd Hint is that iu our hast* to populate our territory with for eigners we have given nway that which of right belonged to our own posterity, if we have not transformed American liberty tnto foreign des potism.
