Th« tide o f immigration to the l'u
oifio (Joast this year surpasses that of
any period for the last ten yearn, and
the advent of these new additions to
our population are assurances that
our progress and prosperity has been
heralded to the outside world, and
the Pacific Coast is to become the
home of thousands from beyond the
Bookiee eastward to toe Atlantic.
California is especially fortunate in
its increase o f population, and from
Hiskiyou to Han Diego, and the Si
erras to the sea, the unclaimed lands
are being taken up by the thousands
of settlers who have flocked to the
golden State, many of them from for
eign shores.
Oregon and Washington seem to be
the destination of the thousands who
pass through San Francisco on their
way north by steamer, and the great
caravans of “ prairie schooners” cross
ing the Camas of Idaho, down into the
Payette valley, across the Snako river,
and over the skyward Blue Mountains,
are all bound for Oregon or Washing
ton Territory.
So they are coming
month after month to people the great
Pacifio Coast, which is destined to be
the garden spot o f the world, the only
abidiDg place for those who love the
balmy climate, perputuul growth of
orops, and flowers, and Winter as
mild and beautiful as the springtide
o f the Atlantic Blope.

Arriving and departing trains are
taxed to their utmost to supply the
demand for accommodations, and tho.
resources of roads centering at San
Francisco, are daily drawn upon to
their farthest limit. In conversation
with iailroad men on the subject they
express themselves as surprised at the
daily accessions made to the city’s
floating population. Nothing like it
was ever before seen. At present it is
thought that not les.i tkfn 10.000 pas
sengers are received per week and
forwardod to northwestern points by
way of the Northern Pacifae.
Tho
traffic over the road has been so un
expectedly large that at times it was
feund absolutely impossible to pro
cure the completion of rolling stock
necessary to their transportation.
The classes who como hither are com
posed of settlers, as distinguished
from immigrants, emigrants or those
from across tho sea. prospectors and
tourists. Heretofore the first named
have not made their appearance prior
to about the middle of the present
month, and bailed generally from
points east o f the Alleghanies. This
season presents an exception to the
rule, both as to time of arrival, whence
coming, and composition.
The first

depart from Sail Francisco to their

Rockies.
Theso emigrants say that
those familiar with the facts are rep

of the country, llailway officials in
cline to the opinion ihnt the number
of tourists who will visit this vicinity
this season wiil reach 10,000, ami it is
believed 125,000 people will pass en
route to find homes in tho Northwest.
Though California will receive all
she can accommodate, and it is feared
that the great rush to Oregon will
place so many idle men in tho State
that prices for labor will be reduced
and scarcely warrant a ehnngs from
sparsely settled districts, simply with
th# idea of working for wages. What
is needed is settlers who have tho
funds to take up and improve tho vast
area of uncultivated lands.
HOW INDIAN QIKLS ARE C0UKTED-
In the evening the soldiers, seatod
with the warriors in their wigwams,
were placed in rows, with tho squaws
sitting opposite the male portion of
the party. In this position tho
oompanv entertained
themselves
by indulging
in
a rude and
picturesque form o f Indian courtship.
The soldiers, when the women were
not looking, would pelt them with
small pebbles or little kernels of corn.
The squaws threw tt«' pebbles or
corn away dtsHainfmly. The un
lucky fellow who threw it was
thereby informed that the girl would
have nothing o f his suit and that his
case was hopeless. If the girl looked
lingei ing at the pebble nnd did not
throw it away, but retained it, then
the person who threw wus to under
stand that the girl wished time to
consider his suit, but that be had
had still cause for hope. Hilt if she
threw the pebble or kernel directly
back, then his suit was successful

Since the defalcations of John S.
Gray, of the California Harbor Com
mission, this peculiar method of
appropriating mouey seems to have
become prevalent throughout the
country. We read that Gray has
stolen 950,000 and left for Mexico,
only to be cuptured and returned to
the scenes o f his (»dilations, and now
ccNues the news from New York that
officers o f the Equitable Trust Com
pany have discovered that, a clerk
uamed J. B. Marshal, formerly in
their employ, was a defaulter to the
extent o f about 9HO,000, taken during
the last four years. He resigned the
1st of February, to take effect the
1st o f March, but left the offico sev
eral weeks ago and has not been seen
there since. The first intimation re
ceived by the Company that auythiug
was wrong was a note from Marshal
confessing his guilt. An examina
tion of tho books of the concern
showed the extent and manner of
frauds. Marston was “ Interest Clerk,”
his duties being to receive all interest
from money loaned by the Company,
and place it in the bank. When in
terest drafts were received iu the
office, proper receipts were mailed
and tile di lifts given to Marstcu to
put in bank. In the case o f drafts
upon (in vite bankers, it was Mars-
ton’s custom to get the money for
them and pocket it, taking au amount
in proportion to the duy’s receipts.
Somotimea ho took us much ns 91,(HK)
at a time. He bad control of the
books containing lists, checks and
drafts, and managed to conceal his
embezzlements until, finding discov
ery inevitable, lie ran away. Tho
company has submitted the case to
the District Attorney, and it is sup
posed Marston will be indicted and
arrested as soon ns lie can be caught.
Marston entered tho Equitable Trust
Company's employ in L873, when a
boy of 15, rising step by step. Ho
was not known So livo extravagantly,
and tho fact that lie kept several
horses and carriages at his place in
Plainfield, N. J., was accounted for
upon the score of private means. The
officers of tho company are uniiblo,
so far, to find out where the stolen
money is or went to.
