soon as they are largo enough, hill them
well up, and close to each plant drive a
forked «tick, leaving about three feet
aboveground. On the forks place long
poles, firmly tied. T o these train tho vines
tyiug wi^h strings, and uip off the shoots
that grow too far above them. By this
means every fruit will be fine, free from
mud, even when heavy rains fall, and the
vines keep in bearing uutil late autumn.
T he above plan strikes us as being
somewhat unique, but it has same meri
torious points which will recommend it
to most village gardeners. On the old plan
the potatoes always grow in tho ground,
and require quite an expenditure o f mus
cle, to extricate them from the sodden
•eil. But if they can be induced to grow
on vines suspended to poles threo feet
above ground, as our friend of the Dairy-
taan says, the fruit will be free from mud
even in rainy weather, and then one cun
pick his tubers and put them away with
out bending his back. Try it again Murk,

A terrible tragedy was er.acttod at tho
farm o f Mrs. W arren, 4J miles southeast
o f Salem, on last Thursday M ay 17th.,
for the particulars o f which we are indebt
ed to the Salem Talk. A Mr. K elly and
a man by the name o f M urphy were re
turning home from Salem to tho said
farm, in company witli a man named
Brooks. K elly and Murphy were very
much intoxicated ond boasted o f their
fighting qualifications until they both be-
came angry and ready to fight. On ar
riving at hom e they all got out o f tho
wagon, and K elly and Brooks proceeded
to unhitch the team, while M urphy
walked into the house. H e was only
gone n moment until he returned with a
double-barrelled shot, gun, and, without a
word o f warning, fired the contents of one
barrel directly into the face o f Kelley,
literally tearing his head to fragments
and killing him instantly.
H e then
walked back into tho house and took a
•eat by the fire. Brooks hastily put tho
team away, and saddled a horse prepara
tory to going to Salem after an officer.
H e stepped to the house and told M ur
phy his intention, and was turning t<* go
when M urphy called him to stop; and,
taking a pistol from his pocket with« 'it
rising from his chair, he put the muzzle to
his head, and exclaim ed: “ H ere 1 g<>,”

B. J. K en da li A Co., Gentleman:—I feel
it a duty to others suffering with piles and
falling of the rectum to write you. I have had
the piles and prolapsus of the rectum for five
years, for the past three years I have suffered
the most agonizing pain. Tried everything
without relief, but after ten days use of K en
dall’s .Spavin Cure I have not seen or heard
of the piles since. One who has not suffered
as 1 have cannot comprehend the great joy
that I feel at being cured of a disease almost
worse than death. I had a valuable young
horse that had a large bunch gather on his
I breast bone. I tried all kinds of liniments and
, had it cut open without any benefit. .Saw
your advertisement and bought a bottle of
! Kendall’s .Spavin Cure and ordered my
j teamster to use as directed. In less than one
| week t h e ' lump had disappeared. Thinking
j that a liniment that would do what Kendall's
| Spavin Cure has done for* my horse might
benefit more. I tried it as a last resi*rt.
W ith gratitude and Iwst wishes for your
success. I am faithfully yours,

FARMERS ATTENTION!
P IL E S !
Headers of the the Commercial can not well
forget that a large ^ space has for years been
takee up by Kendalls advertisements
especially of a certain Spavin Cure. We have
had dealings with Dr. Kendall for many years
and the truth is fully and faithfully proven
not only that he is u good honest man, and
that his celebrated .Spavin Cure is not only all
, that it is recommended to he, hut that the
! Knglirih language is not capable of recommend-
I ing it too highly
Kendall's Spavin Cure will cure spayins.
! There are hundreds of cases in which that has
j been proven to our certain knowledge, But, *
: after all, if any person confines the useful lies'!
j of this celebrated medicine to during spavins
alone, they make a big mistake. It is the
best medicine known as an outward applica
tion for rheumatism in the human family. It
is the best medicine known as an outward ap-
plication for rheumatism in the human family.
It is good for paine and
swellings and
lameness, and is just as safely appi lied to men
women and children as it is to horses. W
know that there are other good liniments, but
we do believe this spavin cure to be far hat
er than any ever invented.
