I f we are to have a celebration it is high time that some stepi be taken in reference to it. W o u ld it not be well to call a mass meeting at tho Court House some time during the coraming week to . take tho mattor under advisement? Tho M ay number of the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine came to our desk again this week with its wonted treat of intellectual subjects treated in a most interesting and nrtistic manner. The Century stands second to none of tho great literary magazines of America, aud is worth twice the amount of its subscription price. The Mny number of the St. Nicho las comes to us this week, if possible, improved ovor anything iu the past. It is a rich treat for the young folks. ^ o v m - A H IP P Y E NEW YEAR TO A LL By the kindness of the citizens of Yam hill, ( ’ luckainas, Polk, Benton, Linn aud Marion counties, after six years business from a small starting point, I am here. And why is itl Because I neve flung ip your faces that “ I possessed large amounts of glittering gold.” 1 have never said yen would have to trade with me and yoircouldn’t help yourselves. I have never said "1 didn’t want Salem to grow any larger, for fear it might bring too much competition in business,” and 1 did not turn a cold shoulder to the W o! ens Mills last summer. in six years of business wo do not find it all sunshine; b it, f< low citizens, I ) I must say that 1 thank you un your kind ness and fwtrouage, and hope to lie able to merit a continuation of your past fa- For 188!!, 1 have tlie largest stock of shelf hardware south of Portland, con- . sisting of all articles usually found in- ' hardware stores. 1 will also have a full line of engines, threshers, headers, wagons, plows, spring tooth harrows, twine pinders, harvesters, rc ipcrs, mow ers fruit daers, etc., Please give me a call. Corner of State and Commercial streets, Salem, Oregon. Salem Directory. T. 1!. W a i t come. The Board of Trade have called a citizens meeting to morrow at Near Mar ket Theatre to hear Mr. Villard on rail road matters. 1 will delay tins letter in order tuat 1 may give you the substance of what he has to say. A great many saloons keepers have refused to take out the license; most of them have been ar rested, and have been brought before the police judge for trial. They have de manded s jury trial, which will very much prolong their cases according to yesterday’s proceedings in the police coart. I t is evident these defers of the public peace are determined to have none on the jury but those who sympathize with them. The public sentiment of the people just now is u healthy one, and there is a determination on the part o f all ood citizens to see the law enforced, and doubt not will finally triumph and close up some of the vilo dens that have dis graced this city so long. California strawberries are being offered for sale at ihe fruit stands., while it is yet almost winter weather with us, we can enjoy the famous dish of strawberres and cream, provided we have spare cash enough to purchase the berries. «rood rich cream is a scarce article in the city. By the time milk is brought from the country to the city, considerable water finds its way into it. Perhaps the milk will lie purer when the rain is over. Since the fire department hus been made a paid department, hut few tires have occurred. While the cost of the city under the pres ent system will be more th ill it was un der tile volunteer system: still the city will be the gainer in the security of prop erty from fires. The lire department is well managed, and a credit to the city. ‘ The New Market Theatre was crowd ed to its utmost capacity to hear Mr. Henry Villard on rail road matters. He made a long speech and was often greeted with applause. As Ilia speech will be fully reported to the daily papers, it will not bo necessary for me to give your readers more than aa mere outline of his remarks, and only of that part having special reference to Portland. He spoke of Portland aa a great rail road centre, and predicted from this fact a great fut ure for tho city. Tho great union depot is to bo built, the largo hotel on the block urcliased from the school district is ti e erected. l ie nlso said the great iron and steel works were to be built; all of thesu tilings would Indicate the growing prosperity of Portland. Your correspondent does not deem it necessary to write of the various railrord extentions t > bo made by the corporations represent ed by Mr. Villard. Judging from Mr. Vdlard's remarks this entire csst, w ill on the completion of the Northren Pacific see an era ot prosperity dawn upon it of which the people never dreamed. Mr. Villard is a mail o f commanding appear ance, and impresses one that he is a man, who sees clearly, and is comprehensive enough to take in the situation at a glance, and has that wonderful business capacity that he can unite with him the best busi ■loss men, and the command of an unlim ited amount of capital. While Mr. V il lard had much to any in tavor o f tho pro gress Portland is making, he did not fail to severely criticise wherein he saw that they failod to appreciate tho situation, and consO'|UO!itly did lint display the busi ness enterprise they should. 1 think there will ho no more fears on the part of the business men of Portland tor the growth and prosperity of this the metrop olis of Oregon. Z kna . f pains to observe these simple rules, it will save us an endless amount of trouble, and themselves a great deal cf annoyance. F o r nothing is more m u rrm Editor Item izer:— Since writiu* my but letter we hare l>ad a few clear day«, which haa been taken advantage of by builders and the sound of the hammer and trowel can be heard on every street in the city. Portland is growing beyond the expectations of her most sanguine citizens. I f nothing happens to check her onward growth, in a few years she will become a city o f vast proportion. Since Mr. Villard came here, a check has boon put on the sale of real estate. His movements have been rather mysterious, which has caused considerable uneasiness on the part of some. The fact the he in tended going to the sound, before com in g to Portland, alarmed our business men; so he was induced to come direct to Portland, but he came quietly and the average citizens were scarcely aware of his presence among us. Since then he has been to the sound, and as he did not make any important promises over there, contidence is beginning to return here, and it only needs a few words from this railroad king to start another “ boom.” Mr. Villard to a certain extent holds the destiny of Portland, and in fact many other places in the north west. Th e honev chambers are so arranged that the bees can be shut off fio m them after they are filled, givin g them fiee access from the outside of the hive to the unfilled cham bers. B y this means the honey, which is put up in one and five pound frames, can be taken from the hive at pleasure, without disturbing or even seeing the bees.
