E ditor J tkm izer :— I u my last letter I
mentioned the fact that there was some
probability that the city council would re
peal the high license ordinance. This
however they did not do; but they amend
ed tho ordinance, reducing tho license
from $800 to $500 per annum, and reen
acting the $5000 bond. Tho proprietors
of the low dives are in trouble over over
it, for many of them cannot procure the
bond. Up to the present time about ten
saloons have taken out a license, more
will, before the time of limitation expires;
but mauy find great difficulty in procur
ing tho requisite bondsmen. I f rhe law
is rigidly enforced, it wlil close some of
the worst saloons iu the city. All saloons
are bad enough, but there are some here
that are perfect dens of infamy and crime,
and if this ordinance does not close them,
red handed justice^will meet out to them
sooner or later their just deserts. The
police force will do much to wipe out
the odium that has been heaped upon
it of late by “ The News,” in a m .unr
promptly all violators of the law.

Portland is a badly sewered city; that
is, it is but partially sewered. As fur as the
city hits been sewered the system works
well; but more sewers are needed and
stringent regulations made requiring all
persons living on a street having a sewer
iu it, to connect with tho sewer. So far
this year the city has not authorized the
sewering of any street. Other street im
provements aiyj being made; but this, the
most needed is neglected.
