Accuracy in these apparently un- important particulars is the surest lign of a really cultured mind. * Few persons go through life with out the necessity of writing occa- . (¡aaallj, and the correctness of the ’ writing will often have an import- j o t bearing on the interests and mtlihre of the scribe. We know of a case where misspelling, in the application of a teacher for a posi- - Mon, aaused his rejection. If so rigid a rule were universally adopt ad, the ranks of teachers would ha thinned. Young men may be versed in the higher branches, yet the inaccurate knowledge of thoir own language will sometimes cause them to be humiliated. To write a legible hand, to spell correctly, to know when to use capitals and where to place the marks of punc- joation, form an accomplishment that is of the gieatest value and as, rare as it is valuable. And, spelling being excepted, the ethenare easily learned. The anóm a la« condition of our system of spalling makes it difficult to he a goad speller, yet the attainment of the art of spelling correctly is ■ worths of the utmost effort. No young man or woman should re ceive a diploma from our Colleges or Universities until approximate perfection is attained in a knowl- yjga of these .things. No^otlior knowledge or accomplishment will oompensate for a lack of this ele mentary knowledge. It is a kind of knowledge that is of daily use, and intendsd, so to speak, for every day wear. In stating that the com mon schools do not perform their proper office, in this respect, we know what we are talking nbout. And we write with the hope that our words will incite teachers to inform themselves, and then teach the children under their cliaige. how to write correctly. An Oregonian dispatch details an account of a most terrible dis- iatar that occurred on Wednesday, by the burning of a hotel in Mil waukee, Wisconsin. Nearly a hun dred people perished in the flames. Many deeds of heroism in saving Ufa were performed and heart-rond Ing acenes were enacted in full ▼law of the multitude. The hotel waa to surrounded by telegraph wins as to greatly interfere with afibrts to save the inmates. The scenes at the morgue are described as heart rending beyond power of (¡ascription. One lady, married the day before, was burned to death and disfigured almost beyond rec ognition. Her husband was mad with grief. The hotel was known far and wide as a fire-trap, and in surance had been refused liy the coni panics. Occasionally we got a “ blessing" for some item that appears in this paper. It may as well bo under- etood that we do not use, or allow the use of, our columns to injure any person whomsoever. Tho Pendleton Tribune has com menced its sixth year and is an ex cellent county paper. The Pendleton civil service bill lias passed both houses of Congress. Bill Nye, of the Laramie Boom erang, publishes a lengthy article on new methods in carving, and winds up by saying: "M y great suocess, however, in carving is muinly confined to the watermelon. The watermelon does not confuse me. I always know where to find the joints, and those who do not like the inside of the melon can have the outside. Now, my great trouble with fowls is, that one day I have Nebraska chicken and the next day I have to assassi- nato a Mormon Shanghai pullet, with high, expressive hip bones and amalgam paletot. This makes me nervous, because they are so dissim ilar, and their joints are in differeut places. The Mormon hen is round- shouldered, and her collai-bone is more on the bias than the Nebraska fowl. This gives a totally differeut expression to her features in doatli, and, as I have said, destroys the symmetry of the carve. I began my education in this line by carving butter in hot weather, and gradually led up to quail on toast. In carving the quail, first mortgage your heme and get the quail. The quail should be cooked before carviug, but not before the chronometer balance and other organs have been removed. Place your quail on tho toast in a sitting position, then, passing the dissectiug knife down between the shoulder-blndcs, dissect the polo naise. Another method is to take the quail by the bind leg and eat it, asking the guests to do the same. This breaks up the feeling of stiff ness that is apt to prevail at a for mal dinner party, and while each one has his or her nose immersed in quail, good feeling cun not fail to show itself. A bill relative to the Presidential succession has passed the Senate. It provides that in case of the death, resignation or inability to act o f both the President and Vice- President, the succession shall go to the Secretary o f State, of the Treasury, of War, the Attorney General, Postmaster Oeneral, the Secretary of the Navy, and of the Interior, in the order named. Tho killing of tho Indians, Wapato Dave and his wife, will cost Polk County a iatge sum of money. It is manifestly unjnst that white people should be com pelled to pay for tho suppression or punishment of crime among a class of persons who do not con tribute to the support of the g ov ernment. We suppose, however, there is no holp for it, and that the authorities ware obliged to taka cognizance of the crimo. There are ¡1,200,000 blacks, 2,- 200,000 native whites and 700,000 foreign whites over ten years of ago, in the United State», who can not raad and write. This is an onorraous amount of ignorance, but these figures do not express all of it. Add to these millions the mil lions more whose knowledge is so limited and elementary as to ren der thorn unfit for intelligent com prehension of any subject, and we are fain to fear that we have been over-rating the intelligence of the American people.
