Frank Dice is slowly recovering from his recent severe illness. M. C. Russell has sold out his entire stock of drugs to Mr. Henry Patterson. It is rumored that Brigham Young, of this county, will soon lead to the altar one of the belles of Old Town. Mr. C. A. Savage has received his new stock of drugs, and is now engaged in putting them upon the shelves. Capt. John Smith, of the Warm Spring Indian agency was in town the first of tho week, visiting his son, Dr. T. F. Smith. The special I aw amending the charter of Independence and enlarging its bound aries has passed both houses and been signed by the “Governor. \\ llliams & Slopcr, for a long time en gaged in the saloon business here, have dissolved partnership by mutual consent, and discontinued the busiuess. The high school was never in a more nourishing rendition than now. There are nearly 100 studonls in attendance, with a prospect of more bein^* added t > the number before the holidays. Mr. Webber has completed the survey of the proposed water ditch, and a com pany is now being incorporated for the purpose of putting the scheme into prac tical operation. Work will not be com menced until spring. Manager Stechhan promises to visit our town with a first class troupe on an aver age of twice a month, during the coming winter. If ho will let the people know of his coming in the usual way, we will insure him good houses. The Boston Comic Opera Company played hero on last Wednesday to a small house. The performance was good, and deserved better patronage. The company came unheralded except by a few hand bills, and the small house is easily ac counted for. It is tho first time that a small house has greeted any of the first- class troupes since the opera house was opened. Last Tuesday night a man was discov ered by tho women folks in Mr. Wolf’s house in the attempt to secrete himself, presumably with the intention ot robbing it during the night. Hearing a noise in one of tho back rooms, Miss Davis, who is stopping at Mr. W olfs, went to ascer tain the cause, and tho man caught her by the arm, whirled her around, darted out the door and made his escape. As the McMinnville and Amity robbers were seen in town between 11 and 12 o’clock, it is thought it was one of them. Last Tuesday night between 11 and 12 o ’clock two strangers entered Harry Grif fith’s saloon and called for the drinks and also asked for the Oregonian, and then passed out, meeting Marshal Williams at the door, who thought ho recognized in them the parties who committed the rob beries at McMinnville and Amity last Sunday and Monday nights, but not being sure of his men he let them pass on; but after studying the description of the two men a few moments, he became thoroughly convinced that they were the robbers, and started in pursuit; but too late, however, as they had made good their escape. They crossed the river and remained in the brush all day Wednesday. The Marshal, with a posse, crossed the river after them Wednesday evening, but did not succeed in catching them. ----------- ■ ■ — Until the 1st of October, I will sell my stock of furniture slinost at cost. On Wednesday evening, as announced, Mr. William Rubell, jr., delivered his lecture, “ By Land and Sea,” at the Band Hall. The speaker gavo a description of his voyage from San Francisco to Liver pool in December, 187d. On the trip he was washed overboard l>y a heavy sea, with another seaman, and by the merest chance was rescued. Eis companion was lost. It was his intention to return home from Liverpool, but no vessel sailing, and being out of money and not able to obtain einplojtyuent, ho enlisted in the British army, and was soon afterward, with his regiment, ordered to India. His trip to India through the Suez canal, was graph ically described. A part of the journey was over tho lino of march of Alexander the Great, and near the site of the city built by tliat conqueror in honor of his horse. Tho lecturer gave an accouht of the campaigns in the Afghan war, in which he participated, being wounded with a sword knife in an engagement with an ambush party. He gave an interesting sketch of the various peoples inhabiting that region. The Hindoos are pure vege tarians, and are imbecile and effeminate, while the Mussalmen, living in the same country, are intelligent and muscular. He drew from this the conclusion that tho vegetarian doctrine is fallacious. The return trip was described, embracing a description of Gibraltar, of London, Liv erpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Few persons so young as he have had such ex periences. The speaker's language is re markably clear, chasto and simple, and his narrative both interesting and in structive. This being his first effort on the rostrum, his delivery lacked some thing of the vivacity of the trained lec turer. The arrangement of the subject matter, however, and the plain narrative style, are more to our liking than the usual gaudiness of such lectures. The speaker, in his conclusion, modestly re ferred to his inexperience, and hoped he had interested his audience. Mr. Rubell's lecture shows an observation and an in telligent study of what he saw abroad, worthy of a much older head. * V IS T A IT E M S .
