What does it mean? Doing things
for the good of the community at large
without always first stopping to figure
out whether the deed will bring back
to the individual every dollar invested.
Has Union any men with such a spirit?
Yes, quite a number of tlimn. Some
well off and others witli but little of
this world's goods, yet always willing
to lend a helping hand if it will tend
to the general wellfarc of the town.
Has she any of a different spirit? The
facts would seem to indicate it, though
wo should not bo too quick to criticise
those who do not choose to at once
take up with what we think best.
Some are Blower than othors in reach
ing conclusions, but in tho long run
always do their share in the way of
encouraging and assisting public
enterprises. But show us the man
who persistently refuses to give a dollar
without absolute security for its return
in tho samo shape, and wo will show
you a man utterly devoid of public
spirit, and of but little benefit, to the
community. Liberal peoplo always
feel better and generally got along just
as well as those who cling to every
dollar that cornea into their possession.
Our town is a pleasant placo of abode,
but thore are not enough means of
earning a livelihood. Wo need, and
must have, if wo would prosper, moro
work for those who live by tho sweat
of tho brow. Industrial enterprises
generally go whore tho best induce
ments aro offered. If all hands would
Uko hold to tho extent of their ability,
Union could bo niado in a very few
yeara a busy hivo of industry.

The republicans of Ohio are going
to make a desperate effort to deprive
Senator Brico of his seat in the United
States senate. This is because he is a
democrat, and his seat is simply wanted
for a republican. It is not for the
purpose of righting a wrong, or of
vindicating any violated law, but sim
ply to make room for some hungry
republican.

Thero is much excitement in Now
York over tho composition of tho legis
lature. The republican party is hold
ing largely attended mass meeting and
passing resolutions denunciatory of
Jov. Hill and tho democracy. Thoy
are accused o( trying to steal u major

They are riding rough-shod over the
laws and tho constitution, and issuing
certificates of election1 lo defeated
candidates in utter disregard of the
popular will.
All this is arrant hypoorUy. Tho
democrats have just elected a gover

plurality of nearly 50,000. And yot
Tom Piatt, tilting as a champion of
political integrity, would havo tho
world boliove that his party has hon
estly carried tho legislature. Since
tho time of tho civil war only two
republican govornorB havo occupied
tho gubernatorial mansion at Albany,
With thofo exceptions an unbtokon
lino of victories hits marked tho
democracy' contents. Sometimes its
ascendency has been measured by a
few thousand votes. Onco it reached
to nearly 200,000. But in spito of this,
astounding as it may eccm, during all
theso years tho rcpul licans havo inva
riably controlled one branch of th
legislature or tho othor, and only once
or twico havo tho democrats had tho
most votes, oven on a joint ballot.
For quarter of a century the
republican party has boon stealing
the Now York legislature. It has
stolon it with such iteration that it

of robbery haa Wit an unjust and

Minneapolis is said to havo been

it will take something moro subbtan

At the close of the thirtieth ballot
Monday, the long talked of speaker
ship contest was brought to a close
when Charles F. Crisp, of Georgia, re
ceived 119 votes and was elected
speaker qf the house. The thirtieth
and last ballot was as follows : Crisp,
119; Mills, 105; Springer, 4; Stevens,
1. The Orcgonian, in commenting on
the election, says:
"Charles F. Crisp, of Georgia, is one
of the most distinguished figures upon
the floor of congress. He has been
upon the floor of .the house for
eight years and lias during all that
time been an active participant in all
its debates and actions. Last year he
led the fight for the democratic side in
the contested election cases, having
been formerly chairman of tho com
mittee on eloctions. He also, during
a large part of tho tession, led the
fight against Reed's rulings, and made
probably the best speech that was
made combating them. Crisp is a
strong orator, and his speeches upon
the tariff question have always at
tracted attention. As a speaker he is
sharp, snappy and aggressive, has
made the rules of the house his par
ticular study, and it is pretty generally
conceded that since tho death of Mr.
Randall and the elevation of Mr. Car
lisle into tho senate, no democrat in
tho house is as competent and forcible
an authority as ho on questions of
parliamentary law.
Both of Mr. Crisp's parents were
English actors. They camo to this
country on a professional tour, and,
liking the country, became naturalized
citizens. In lbSlo they returned to
England on a professional tour, and
tho speaker was born at Sheffield. His
parents retured to this country and
settled in Georgia. In 1861, when he
was 10 years of ago, Crisp enlisted in
the Confederate army, and became
captain. Early in tho war he was
made prisoner, and was kept for a year
at Fort Deleware. After his release he
joined his parents nt Ellaville, and was
admitted to tho bar in I86G. Ho soon
made a reputation as ono of tho best
attorneys in tho state. In lalz no
was appointed solicitor-general for the
southwestern judicial circuit. In 1878
ho was appointed judge of tho super
ior court, but resigned in 1882 to ac
cept tho democratic nomination tor
congress. HiB home is in Americus.
