EtiiTOK Orkoon Scout:
In my lust I btonpct in my narra
live as the train approached the ferry
landing, where the ferry boat rested in
the slip ready to receive the engine
and cars and convey them from the
Oregon shore to Kalama on the Wash
ington shore. From some cause, after
the boat withdrew from the slip it was
turned so that the cars rode backwards
ncross tho river to the slip at Kalama
where tho train was backed off the
boat from the samo end that first re
ceived tho train. When about mid
way of the stream I left tho cars and
stood on tho deck, that I might better
behold tho grandeur of tho great and
noble stream, and while taking into
consideration the majesty of the great
Columbia river I was led to exclaim :
Thou noble strcnml of prieeleim worth,
Thy iikc unknown, or time of birth;
Or when thy vntern, bold and utroiiR,
wr V nun Hi) HnnjiBiiwiiimi'
HuKiin to roll thy tides iiIoiir,
Thou noble Ktrcnin! I'rlde of the west!
We safely ridcuimn thy breast.
And Keiitly thou dost bear ur o cr
UKin thy tide, from shore to nhorc.
Thou noble nt renin I unchecked and free,
Forever flowing to the cn,
While oft 11 Kin thy rippling tide
The stately ftcamcrn Mifcly glide.
Our stay in Kalama was short and
we wore soon speeding our way in tho
great state of Washington. We jour
neyed for quite a distanco along tho
Cowlitz rivor, by orchards loaded with
fruit. For a. considerable distanco tho
railroad hugged tiic bluffs. I noticed
a. cemetery up at tho right of tho road
where a few slabs wcro standing to tell
the talo of sickness and death that is
met in all climes and localities, whero
tho rich and tho poor, the strong and
the weak, tho, wise" and tho unwisu are
all brought to one common level. I
noticed several little station towns
along tho road that will, in the course
of . time, havo to back high up the sido
hills, if they ever succeed in being
cities of much prominunco. We
crossed tho Cowlitz river at 3:15 p. m.,
and left the stream at our right, We
passed Little Falls atH:2H. At this
place wo wore about six miles (direct)
from my daughter's homo, hut we
must needs go on to Chchalis on ac
count of impasablo roads out from
Little Falls I saw but littlo to Inter
est mo from this placo on, and only
noted tho timo of passing tho little
stations. Wo passed Mill switch at I
3:31; Winloek at 3:37; Naplerino at
3:51; Nowaukum at and arrived at
Che'halis at 4 :lf p. m. October 7, 1 Si) J .
The morning of the Sth was quito
foggy, but tho fog soon cleared away.
Chohalis is not really a picturcsquo
town, yet Micro are many nice build
ings, and it boars tho appearance of a
prosperous town, as well as tho ap
pearance of a vory muddy one. I
noticed thai many of its streets wore
planked with heavy lir plank. I also I
noticed a very nico, largo school house,
which told that tho people looked
nftor the Wfjll-boing of tho rising gen
eration. I was told tho population of
the place was about 4,000. On the
9th,, at about 10 it. in., we loaded into
R'hiredtrohvoyanoo aud sturted for tho
place of our destination, a distance of
near 2f miles, nearly south, up the
ChohnllH river, amid a wilderness of
exceedingly heavy and large growth
of timber. Wo halted for the night
within about threo miles of homo and
nest morning discharged our team
and hired an ox team to tnko us the
rcBt of tho way. 1 walked most of tho
way, and as I used to bo quito tv huml
at fishing I thought to out a little
Htaddle that stood by tho sido of the
river, and try my luck ; but after view
ing tho staddlu that 1 thought to cut
for a fish pole, I thought I would not
cut it just yet. 1 measured it and
found it to be 0 feet in diameter, and
tall accordingly, so I left it stand.
We arrived at home a little boforo
noon October 10th, whero wo now uro

Everything is booming.
Tho health of our people is splendid
Land here is worth from !f 35 to $50
an acre. Good hay land is algo worth
$50 per acre.
E. and W. Chandler's fine dwelling
is almost compictcu. it presents a
good appearance.
Several commodious dwellings are
being erected in the valley, also a fine
church with a hall overhead.
G. W. Moody has built a fine, two
story addition to his residence. It
adds greatly to his nico home.
There are a great many new comers
arriving in the valley this fall, and wo
ure looking for two more families every
day.
Geo. Sanders and Dave Allen have
built good houses, and I have no
doubt but Dave is looking after her
now.
There will be thousands of prune
trees set out hero this fall. Eagle val
ley is fast being cut up into small
fruit farms.
rank r. hco is building a very
substantial residence at the uppef
bridge. I guess Frank will run a
1
hotel and feed stable
Tho now bridge at tho upper end of
tho valley is completed, and it looks
like a Cheap John concern, as it is put
up on a very cheap plan.
Thoro aro a largo number of fat cat
tle for sale in the valley. Buyers
would do will to visit this section if
they aro in need of beef cattle.
W. W. Kirby has a farm of 100
acres, well improved, which he will
tsell cheap for cash. Call on or ad
dress him at New Bridge, Union coun
ty, Oregon.
All of our horso men that shipped
horses cast this fall are still absent.
Lewis Ferguson is expected home this
week. Eli Chandler is in Minnesota
with his horses and savs tho nrices uro
low. K. Young is in Illinois. Others
aro in Missouri. We hope they will
all havo good luck and a safe journey
to their Oregon homes.
Eagle valloy can boast of tho finest
vegetables that over grow out of tho
earth, aud the 10 aro enough to supply
Union and Baker counties. They are
being sold very cheap. Four potatoes
dug out of ono hill in Ben Ixmgloy's
gardon weighed 23 pounds. Who can
beat that and tell the truth? That is
not all. Wm. Bcnnehofl' raisod some
apples that weighed 2 pounds each,
and has some of tho same apples yet.
I want to see if any of tho mossbaoks
of WobfooY can beat that.
Messrs. Noble it Dooley have a fine
lot of mutton sheep hero on alfalfa
pasture and will feed a large band
this wintor at W. W. Kirby's ranch.
Mr. Childors will feed a largo band or
so at John Fnuier'a ranch; Barber
Bros, will feed at Sanders' ranch ; Tim
Quingley will feed at Frazier's; tho
Jacobson Bros, will feed at Ben. Long
loy's ranch and I'.-r Iowe will foed
at C. H. Craig's, i.ral other par
ties havo thousands of tons of fine hay
for sale at $4 por ton, with good feod
ing yaitlB. Thoso desiring to feed
stock will do woll to come to Englo
valloy, for wo can turn out stock in
February and save at least two
months feeding, which is quite an
item to stock growers.

Over at Cheney a lady, Mrs. Cora M.

of one year, beginning in Oct. 1800,
Sho hud been teaching about six weeks,
when a vnomber of tho school board
visited the school. Ho listened awhile
to the recitation, and then got up to

highly complimented tho teacher and
tho pupils, tho former for her cnicicn

ho finished his address ho found the
teacher fast asleop. This caused tho
"trusteo" to become very indignant; he
