first farmers' alliance was organized,
and tho objects in view by tho pioneer
originatore, show plainly what the leal
mission of tho Order is. Away down
on the uttermost bolder of Texas,
about fifteen years ago, near Lampasis,
the idea originated. Tho settlers wero
harassed with cattlo thieves from Mex
ico, and bordering counties in Texas.
Tho country was spaisely settled and
law, in tho modem, civilized fcons-o of
tho word, was banished fiom the lan
guage of a certain class of tho popula
tion. Mutual protection and brother"

peril of the wilderness. Their families
depended on tho growth of tho herd
for subsistence, and in order to defend

under tho solemn compact, which
stands today at tho main struetuio of
tho alliance,1 but with fow alterations.

From extremely humble beginning,
in a remote ruction, from among men
honett and loyal and faithful, but tin

There is some discussion ainong

whether tho alliance should become
an outspoken political organization,
but in most instances the sentiment is
decidedly against such a stand and in
favor of remaining a strictlv social
order, bettering our financial surround
ings by frequent innovations and tho
establishment of co-operative enter
prises As a social institution it has a
wonderful field of operation. Tho
limes demand unity of action in all
reform. Men are losing tho old time I
spirit of intolerance and superstition.
We need some rejuvenator in Ameri
can society, anil when we get mothers
and daughters and wives and sisters
imbued with tho spirit of change, the
sons of Adam will find it burdensome
to resist. When we once establish the
fact by actual manifestation, by living
proof, that the alliance is no host of
anarchs demanding tho annihilation
of all human achievement, and tho
distribution of property, tho non-communicants
will look with more charity
on the Coining Kaco!
Of courso membership in tho order
does not disrobo men of their human
propensities. Tho aim is elevation
and advance. It teaches men that
Truth is tho epitome of all goodnet-p.
Uut in tho light of this teaching there
is yet dishonesty and tieachery fcr
no order, bo it ever so ancient, is free
from tho inroads of passion and hu
man frailty. The tempter smiles with
wiohety and grace at ovtyy turn in
the patli of human destiny, and many

Homo overestimate the duty of the
oulor, and in seeking to further its
good .work lose sight of consistency.
Some think charity means tho giving
of substance to any and every causo
and bestow lavishly wlieio tho need is

prehended by m, is tho uplifting of
those fallen ; the aiding of those in
aotual need ; encouragement to every
honest iibpiratiou; pointing tho best
known way to the lost, and injuring
no one by thought, word or deed!
Tiuth means beinu what we really
are. No mask, nor hypocrisy, nor
deceit. Tho cautious uso of language,
and faithful report. It means to bo
openfaced and above blander. It
means that in our daily intercourse
truth and honesty should hold su
premo sway. Brotherhood means all
that is found in the story of tho Hood
Samaritan help, and aid, and respect,
and love for all mankind. It means
that indissoluble chain of friendship
which in all climes and at all times
binds man to man, with God the pillar
to which the mysterious links nro
locked.

that Mr, Harrison is an adept in tho
preparation of state papers. It would
bo difficult for anyone to put that dis
patch in more uppropriuto language,
and fortunately upon such questions
as this all patriotic Americans, with
out regard to their political affiliations,
occupy ptecisely the same position.
Secretary Blaino had a talk with
Senor Montt, who has been appointed
Chilian minister to the United States
this week, but as the new minister's
credentials have not yet arrived the
talk was entirely informal. Senor
Moult professes the greatest friend
ship for tho United States, but he has
11 friend and associate who lives at the
Chilian legation in this city, that loses
no opportunity to express tho con
tempt which he says the Chilians feel
for this government and its people.
At ono time this fellow, whoso name
is Foster, claimed to be secretary of
the legation, but now he says ho has
no oilicial connection therewith. It
might bo said of Poster, as Commo
dore Yandeibilt onco said of ono of
his sons-in-law "Ho is more kinds of
a blank fool than any man I oversaw."
It is regarded hero as almost cer
tain that tho farmer's alliance of the
eighth Virginia district will nominate
n candidate to succeed tho late Repre
sentative Lee, the only question being
whether the alliance shall allow tho
candidate to bo labeled democratic or
sail under their own Hag. It is an
agricultural district, and can bo con
trolled by tho alliance if no mistakes
are made by them in tho preliminary
work of,niaking tho nomination.
Criticism of public mon without
just causo never helps anybody or any
thing. Tho best, friends of temperaneo
express regret that an attack, in the
namo of temperance, has been made
upon President Harrison, not for any
thing ho has done or left undone, but
because Mr. Andrew Carnegie, the
Scotch-American millionaire, has an
nounced that he had sent a barrel of
Scotch whiskey to tho White House
as a present to Mr. Harrison. It by
no means follows that Mr. Harrison
will drink this whiskey becauso it was
given to him, indeed ho would havo to
have an ostrich stomach if ho drank
all tho liquids sent by cranks and
friends to tho White House. Eow
presidents havo occupied tho White
House whoso personal habits wore
moro tomporato than thoso of Mr.
Harrison, and no president has been a
moro sincero friond to thoso engaged
in temperaneo work; therefore it is
hard to understand why he should be
subjected to harsh criticism for some
thing that ho had nothing whatever to
do with.

H. will meet in this city for the pur
pose of deciding upon tho ditto for
holding tho national encampment
next year, and also for tho examina
tion of documentary evidence showing
that tho Washington executive com
mittee has secured the required con
cessions from hotol-keepcrs and rail
roads and complied with other
stipulated requirements. All theso
things and more hnvo been done.
Every hotol-koepcr in Washington has
bound himsolf in writing not to add
one cent to his rogular charges during
! tho encampment.
A number of officials wont over to
Baltimore Wednesday afternoon to
witness tho launching of tho steel
cruiser Detroit, which was a success.
It is thought that tho twin vessel to
tho Detroit, which is also to bo built at
Uultimore, will bo christened Mobile.
A naval court of inquiry is investi
gating the recent wrecking of the U.I
H. S. Dispatch. It seems that tho
accident wus caused by tho executive
ollluur changing tho hailing orders of
tho (louimuuilor, owing to his mistak
ing one light for another, at least
that's the way the testimony so far
taken makes it look.
"This is no political headquarters"
said an official at the farmers' alliance
headquarters when asked for political
news from Ohio; "whatever action
individual members of the organiza
tion may take tho National Alliance
has not yet gone into politics."
Hon. Jerry Simpron, who passed
through Washington this week, says
tho alliance representatives will havo
their own candidate for shaker and
will not. go into tho caucus of either of
the old parties.
