During the past two or three vceks
wc have interviewed a number of the
buBinces men of litis city in regard to
to a special illustrated edition of The
Scoot, to be issued about January 1st.
Every business man whom we have
talked to is in favor of the enterprise
and will support it liberally, and wo arc
now warranted in stating that it
will be a go.
Wc have engaged the services of Mr.
M. Heritage, a first-class sketch artist,
who will do the sketching, and the
plates will be made in Chicago. It in
tho intention of Tiik Bcovr to make
thifl edition far Hiiperior to anything
ever attempted in Eastern Oregon, and
besides a full write up of tho town, it
will contain numerous articles con
tributed by some of tho best writorH in
tho county. The edition will contain
from twelve to sixteen pages and from
two to three thousand copies, owing to
tho liberality with which parties sub
scribe for extra numbers. J lint an
edition of this kind will bo of great
.benefit to tho city and county in gen
eral, none will deny, and wo hope to
bo able to issue at least 5,000 copies.
No better and cheaper means can be
employed by which to advertise tho
town, and wo hope that all our busi
ness men will tako an active interest
in tho mutter.
This is a purely homo enterprise.
Wo have tho facilities for doing tho
work and doing it well. It is not our
intention to make anything out of it.

ment and support to know that wo
will eomo out oven on the undertak

last year. The recent vote at Indian
apolis, the home of the president
was more democratic than usual, and
a sign of the popular drift. There
can be no rational republican hope of
carrying Indiana in the national elec
lion. Then New York, Indiana, New
Jersey and Connecticut have sixty
seven electoral votes, which, added to
150 from tho south, give 22G out of
-ill, or three more than enough to
elect.
Tho Chicago News, commenting on
the election, shows that if all the states
which had elections the other day
should go the same way next year, am
all the states which did not have elec
tions should co as they did at the last
general elections, the democrats would
have a majority of more than forty in
the electoral college. This figuring
gives all the new statcB of the North
west. Indiana and half the vote of
Michigan to the republicans. No bet
ter method of dividing tho country is
at hand at tho present writing, and
this may be taken to represent the rel
ativo standing of tho two great parties
today.

an unfair statement it may scorn to
be fanaticism but by overy report of
tho pension bureau, and by nine
tonths of tho army of pensioners, is
tho statement corroborated.
Thoro aro instances occurring daily
in different parts of tho United States,
in which able-bodied men, hard work
ers, and loud iu their praises of physi
cal ability, through perjury, and tho
false reports of examining physicians,
aro obtaining various sums an back
pay, and monthly remittances, iu ad
dition, for tho balance of life and tho
head of tho system is all too loobo in
its flagrant rule too ready to buy a
voter with the people's monoy, and
too ready, iu its forgotfulncsa of honor,
to grant aid to tho undeserving. The
iioldior whoso vigor and vitality was
exhausted in tho hardship and peril of
tho war is justly entitled to a pension,
and the government in aiding such
men does what tho sentiment of every
true American citizen urges, but, on
tho other hand, thoro aro thou.-and.s
who were enlisted and never heard tho
drum beat of tho chaigc, tho clang of
tho nuiBkotry or tho clarion call to
rido down tho ramparts with bayonet,
nor tho musio of bullets, and who
today aro living fat from tho people's
funds and enjoying sturdy health
untouched and unscathed by tho foe
man's bullet or bomb! Such mon aro
perjurers, and such rule is what will
undermine ovory principle of tho
American government in time. Ev
ery true sentiment of tho American
heart rises against tho ignoble prac
tice. Our people are burdened and
oppressed by a crushing weight of
taxes, and interests, and tariffs the
laud companies aro taking tho homes
from families and over it all, like tho
shroud of Doom, hangs tho gaunt
spcotro of tho l'ast, dishing out with
prolligato hand to undeserving reore
auts tho substance drawn from tho
soil, Hour illegal pensions were ap
plied to tho actual expenses of govern
ment, tho rato ol tax imposed upon
tho nation would bo perceptibly
lessened.
Encouragement is offered to idle
ness and corruption in granting pen
sions to unworthy men, and bomo day
the nation will demand the cessation
of such dishonesty. H breeds jealousy
and discontent among American citi
zens, and where such falsehood and
perjury obtains such amplo reward, is
it to bo wondered at that seeds aro
planted which in tho course of time
may ripen into devolution? It has
come to a time in peiibioii giving when
every man that knocks is admitted.
Voters are needed to sustain the tot
tering cause of tho past. Progress
and prosperity are compromised and
the achievement of energy and indus
try is sorrowfully effaced by such
fanatical measures as havo marked
the history of the decline of the pen
sion system.
No wonder the farmers' alliance is
risen. No wonder the voice of reform
has sounded in the distance. There
is needed a radical change. The
blood has been sprinkled on the lintel,
and the angel of Justice is coming.
Politics, in the formation of our gov
ernment, meant tho science of gov
ernment, but now it means intrigue
trickery falsehood hypocrisy. It
has been reduced from a mighty sci
ence down to a corrupt, ignoble dog
ma, having nothing of its ancient
propensities about it. No wonder the
farmer wants illumination. No won
der he wants the gloom of the present
scattered and looks forward to the
bursting of a new radiance. It is time
oppression had run its race and a
reign of the people began.

granulated sugar refined in New
York was retailed in Scotland at
