NEWS NOTES,
La
Grande AVill Celebrate
the Fourth.
THE SEVEN DEVILS RAILROAD.
Two Victims of a Practical Joko New
Patent lee Cream Freezer
To Portland.
La Grando is making preparations for a
grand celebration the coming Fourth. As
we have not heard of any other town in
the valley that is making any preparations
for a celebration, there will no doubt bo a
largo crowd in attendance. The committee
having in charge the management of the
affair are maklmc preparations for a grand
time. Hon. J. N. Dolph will deliver tho
oration. A grand ball will be given at
night under the auspices of the tire compa
ny and there will bo a good display of tire
works. A good programme has been ar
ranged for amusements during tho day,
including races, "plugs" and many other
things too numerous to mention, of which
due notice will be given in the largo ad to
appear next weok. La Grande is also mak
ing preparations to entertain tho Pioneors
of Union county, who will meet there on
June 25th. A good time is promised all
who attend these meetings.
It Is understood that Messrs. Fulton it
Bates will soon return from Salt Lake and
immediately put a largo force of men at
work grading their road to tho Seven Dev
ils. These gentlemen surely merit a great
deal of credit for the manner in which they
hayo pushed their enterprise. They have,
considering the many dlllicultics under
which they labored, accomplished as much
as could be expected of any one. Their
attitude towards tho people of Payettoand
ylcmity has been gentlemanly and honora
ble throughout. Wc believe the result of
pushing the Seattle, Boise it Salt Lake rail
way to the Seven Devils will show their
sagacity and good judgment in undertaking
tho enterprise. Considering tho vast
amount of ore already waiting to bo hauled
from those famous mines, and other prod
ucts of tile country through which the road
passes awaiting transportation facilities, it
is quite certain the road will provo a profit
able investment from tho start. Payette
independent.
We supposed there was not a person
living but what had heard of tho "snipe"
trick or had been a victim to this simple
means of amusement, but it seems
the boys found another victim ono night
last week and "worked him" to perfection,
it is said the fellow held the sack with good
graco and with all earnestness until about
midnight when some ono took pity on him
and went out after bun with a team, when
he was found still at his "post of duty."
This trick, however, is no comparison to
tho ono that was played on one of our
young men, a would-be disciple of Black
stone, on the following evening, it seems
a lot of the boys had devised a "new way''
by which a large number of fish might bo
caught. They procured a lot of gum boots,
a lantern aud board with an auger hole iu
it. The victim was instructed to hold tho
board in tlio water with the augor hole
above and the lantern behind, while the
rest of tho crowd were to go up the creek
and drive the fish down, when they would
see the light through the hole aud jump
through into a sack prepared for tho occa
sion. The young man held the board for
a long time, but became imnatient waiting
for tho boys who had ieturned homo and
wore cither fast asleep or laughing at tho
poor fellow standing in the water waiting
for them to return with droyo of fish. It
is safe to say neither of these young men
will be ciught iu a like manner again, and
the lesson taught them will bo worth con
sidurablo to them during their future life.
J. E. Craig and B. T. Simmons, of Gains
villa, Ga.. arrived iu town last Friday.

aro taxes uncollected which would
increase the fund to over $1,500.00
and that tho s-aino will bo collected,
and it appearing neeessimy to innko
all tho road fund available at once for
use on the roads, it was ordered that
$2,1S2.()5 bo transferred for that pur
pose from the common fund and that
the remainder of the uncollected road
fund bo turned into the common fund
as fast as collected. Thereforo tho road
fund distribution among tho road dis
tricts was made us follows:
