Tim lenders of tho llupublioan will
bo surprised to h'iirn that the grand

At least that is what that paper calls

Tin: W(?st Shore has suspended pub
lication, tho management claiming it
was not a paying investment and (hoy
wore losing money. They soein to lay
thu blame on li. Samuels, thu former
manager. Mr. Sainuuls founded tho
West Shore and managed it for sixteen
years and was sole proprietor, aud in
our opinion published a much bettor
journal than has appeared under the
lato new mainigumont. Ho is now
oik of thu largest stockholders and
will no doubt be (he heaviest loser
Wi iro sorry that a journal of this
class should Ih compelled to succumb,

and hope it will not be long ore its

MoComab. of tho Chronicle, became
somewhat riled because, as ho thought,
the Republican and Gazelle wore fur
nished a copy of tho semi-annual re
port of tho linancos of tho county by
tho olork for publication. The Repub
lican did attempt to publish it and wo
prosumo the Gazette took its copy
from that 'paper, as they wore both the
same. Neither paper published all,
and it was so mixed up that a person
of ordinary iutolligeuco ouuld not tell
anything about it. Tho only oorruot
and ollioial publication of tho report
was made in Tun Scout. Tho reason
of this is vory plain. Tho law says tho
roport shall bo published iu one paper
in tho county, and Tiik Scout is the
propor placo, bt'ouuso it is road by
twioo tho number of people of any
other paper iu the county, a fact that
is well known, and Mr. Oliver could

I At the organization of the Farmer's
Alliance and Industrial Union in this
city a few weeks ago, Tin-: Scout pro
Bontcd a letter offering the alliance two
columns of space in which to express
iU views. In doing this we did not
think wo were- committing a very
heinous ofl'enc,, as wo notice it is a
common thing among our exchanges
to have departments of this kind con
ducted by the alliance, W. C. T. U.
A. 0. U. W. and various other organi
zations. So far as editing and con
ducting a department of this kind in
the interests of any organization, wo
would not proniso to do it. If at any
time we folt disposed to favor tho views
of those conducting a department in
our paper we would have no hesitancy
in doing so, or on the contrary, if their
views wore not in accord with our own
we would also lot the fact bo known in
the editorial columns, which arc our
own, conducted solely by tho editor
who is responsible for every item ap
earing therein.
This ofler of ours seems to worry
MeComns of tho La Grando Chronicle.
It was plain to bo seen that Tin-: Scout
was treading on his loos, and ho has
been simmering and blubbering about
it over since. Last week, however, he
got workod up to a boiling heat and
run ovor, scattering the following
slush on a few only a fow of the
good peoplo of the county:
Our ostecincd young friend who is
struggling to imitato .Jones iu tho edi
torial chair of tho Scout, made sonic
minutes at the meeting of the delegates
who ashcmblud at tho court houso to
organize a county allianco recently.
ThoRo ho proceeds to write up in his
last issue. Among other joltings ho
seems to have remembered quite vivid
ly that he made a bid to try and in
duco somebody who could write some
thing original to tako charge of two
columns of his big white elephant,
hoping, no doubt, thereby to fill at
least two columns witli something that
would induce peoplo to tako his paper
another six or twelve months.
Tim Scout did make minutes of tho
mooting and published a more correct
roport of tho proceedings than any
other paper. Wo made no bid for any
one to tako charge of two columns of
our paper. The oiler was gratuitous
and wo did notoxpoot any great benefit
from it iu tho way of increased circu
lation, but MoComas has his eye on
the allianco and would like to unload
at least half of his diininuativo wind
manufactory onto that organization,
and no doubt thought our arraugomuul
would intoroforo with his scheme.
I lowevor, two columns in Tin: Scout
conducted by tho alliance would bo
worth more and do more good than all
four pages of the Chronicle. Tin:
Scout iB read by three times tho num
ber of people; is an independent
county newspaper, working for the
best interests of (he entire county and
is always pleased to recoivo corres
pondence from any section upon any
and all subjoots. For this reason wo
prod'ered thu alliance space, and tho
odor is still open if they desire to ac
cept it.
If our action has boon the causo of
McConias failing lo unload his "news
paper" onto tho allianco of Union
county, we aro really sorry for Mac.
Notwithstanding his evident desire to
misrepresent us, and his ill concealed
envy of the phenomenal success of this
paper, wo have no animosity towards
him, I'oor Mao. llo is a greater
enemy to himself than anybody else
and it will, probably, always remain so.
Ho seems to forget that (he world has
changed in tho last dcoado and that
the vapory substance ho used to palm
oft' for solid matter in (ho wild and
wooly days of years gone by, does not
pass current any more. A now regime
is upon us aud younger men do hotter
on ontirely difVerent linos.

.....i.vi , ami Uiu mure we learn of the t
gloiioiu principle mikI the pledge, 1
! which can do nothing but elevate each
: and every one who takes it, wo feel to
! thank God anew for this blessed privi
lege. May the band of brotherly lovo
grow stronger and unite in ono grand
alliance this whole nation of American
farmers.
We are proud of our temperance
principles, our president and our lady
lecturer, who are doing all they possi
bly can to discharge every duty de
volving upon them.
Our first meeting was a grand suc
cess in every respect, and we can only
wonder why tome one has not thought
of this movement before. Other
tradespeople have their unions and
can with true joy or sorrow assist their
brothers and sisters in times of happi
ness or distress, and feel a nearness for
ono another, being held by the ties of
lovo and business closely interwoven
together. So may we, although afar
from tho city, not only live for the joy
our alliance affords us, but bo a power
in tho land in the distribution of
knowledge, love and peace.
Wo read something of politics in tho
alliance, but in our organization wc
have as many of ono party as another,
of ono kind of religions as another,
and iu fact arc a little like an omelette
pretty well mixed up. So don't
stand back, farmers, for fear you aro
the only one to leave your "party,"
but do just like the ladies of Big creek
catch on to all that comes along that
will bo a benefit to yourselves or your
neighbors, and let tho wise ones laugh
at our "Socklcss Simpson." Wo aro
glad that socks arc going out of fash
ion and brains arc coming in.
We are having some now scats
mado for tho school house for the ac
commodation of our lodge, which is
tho largest in this state up to tho last
report.
We will close for this time, dear
Scout, thanking you for your favor.

The following lines were punned by II. U
Emery, on the death of tho unknown man
who suicided near tlio Hot Luke hist Fri
day.
He had a homo whore once ho stood,
The pride of a fond mother's heart;
Who loved him. well, nor thought there
would
A timo come when they two must part.
With stilling soh-i she liado farewell
To him who was her pride and joy;
With anguifh did her bosom swell
When parting with her noble boy.
(iood-bye dear mother, dry your tears;
Tis best that 1 should o from home.
Hut hope 'twill not be many years
'Till back again your boy will come.
And thus he left, and passed beyond
The mother' sad and earnest gaze,
And carried in his breast the fond
ltemenibranee of his youthful days.
Far, far from hoiuu ho wandered on
Oft asked for labor to perforin
Oft chilling words told him, begone,
Whllo hunger gnawed his weakened form.
If food he asked, 'twas oft denied
While standing at some rich man's door,
Whose voice, with arrogance and pride,
Hade Una begone and eonio no more.
lie wandered on and sought iu vain
All hope within his bosom died;
llo ne'er could reach his homo again,
Or stand beside his mother's side.
His mind dethroned ull hope was dead
Ho plunged into the pool and died.
His form was found, ami peoplo said
Ho did commit self-hoinleido.
Perhaps that mother now doth wait
And stand within tho open door;
Perhaps, will never know tho fato
Of her dear boy, sho'll seo no more.

The annual convention of the National
Educational Association of the United
States for the present year will be held at
Toronto, Canada, July Uth to 17th, ftnd as
it will on this occasion be of an internation

successful meeting of the series. Most of
the railroads have agreed to give half-rates,
plus $2.00 membership fee to all who attend
the meeting, this rate being open to the
public generally as well as the teachers.
The Canadians are making great prepara
tions to welcome and entertain the visiting
teachers, and numerous cheap excursions
are being arranged to all important points
on the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence and
the sea-side, after the convention, which
will afford the teachers the best opportunity
for enjoying their summer holidays they
have ever had. The official Uulletln, con
taining programme for the meeting, rail
way arrangements, and all other partic
