A rather peculiar petition was pre
sented to tho Kansas house by Mr. Sher
man, of Rooks county. It was from 132
citizens of that county. They want the
legislature to mako an appropriation for
tho purposo of experimenting in tho mat
ter of securing artificial rainfall by
means of cannonading. Tho petition was
as follows: "We, your petitioners, many
of us veterans of tho late war, knowing
from oxperienco that heavy rainfalls fol
lowed each battle or heavy cannonading,
and believing that this fact indicates that
man may produce rainfall by artificial
perturbation of tho atmosphere when
otherwise it would not bo experienced,
and believing it would bo wiso for tho
state of Kansas to mako u reasonablo ex
periment in tho matter of attempting to
produco artificial rainfall, would most
respectfully ask you to mako an appro
priation out of tho treasury for tho pur
poso of such experiments either by can
nonading or otherwise as may bo deemed

John A. Sutter.
John A. Sutter was born in Baden in
1803 of Swiss parents, and was proud of
his connection with tho only republic of
consequenco in Europe, He was a warm
admirer of the United States, and somo
of his friends had persuaded him to come
across tho Atlantic. He first went to a
friend in Indiana with whom ho staid
awhile, helping to clear land, but it was
business that ho was not accustomed to.
So ho mado his way to St. Louis and in
vested what means ho had in merchan
dise, and went out as a New Mexican
trader to Santa Fe. Having been unsuc
cessful at Santa Fe he returned to St.
Louis, joined a party of trappers, went
to the Rocky mountains, and found his
way down the Columbia river to Fort
Vancouver. Thero ho formed plans for
trying to get down to tho coast of Cali
fornia to establish a colony.
Ho took a vessel that went to tho
Sandwich islands, and thero communi
cated his plans to ieoplo who assisted
him. But as thero was no vessel going
direct from tho Sandwich Islands to Cal
ifornia, ho had to tako a Russian vessel
by way of Sitka. Ho got such credit
and help as ho could in the Sandwich
islands and induced five or six natives to
accompany him to start tho contem
plated colony, no expected to 6end -to
Europe and tho Umtod States for his
colonists. When ho came to the coast of
California, in 1810, he had an interview
with tho governor, Alvarado, and ob
tained permission to explore the coun
try and find a placo for his colony. He
camo to tho bay of San Francisco, pro
cured a small boat and explored the
largest river ho could find, and selected
the site where tho city of Sacramento

Silver in Volcunlc Ashes.
The existenco of silver in volcanic
ashes is a rare occurrence. Only in two
cases have argentiferous ashes been met
with. Tlio sample was obtained during
an eruption of Cotopaxi in July, 1885, in
tho ashes of which Mr. J. W. Malet
proved tho existence of ono part of sil
ver in 83,000 parts of ashes. In tho fol
lowing year tho satno investigator was
able to add a second instance. In Janu
ary, 18SC, a violent eruption of Tun,
guragua, in , the Andes of Ecuador, be
tween fifty and fifty-five miles from
Cotopaxi, took place, tho eruption con
tinuing at longer o.r shorter intervals up
to November of tho same year. The
ashes thrown by this volcano, which
had been at rest for over a century,
contained silver to tho extent of one
part in 108.200 parts of ashes. This ap
pears, at first sight, to bo only a very
small percentage of the metal; but when
it is considered what enormous quanti
ties of ashes aro erupted, and what a
vast extent of area they cover aftor an
eruption, the quantity of silver thrown
up with them must W considerable.
