Little Poarl Glidewell took her departure

has been stopping here for the past four
months with her father. She is a bright
little girl and her playmates will be sorry to

J . K. Youucs, of North Powder, was in
the city Monday to pay his taxes. We ack
nowledge a pleasant call. Mr. Youncs
say the fanners iu his section are quite busy
plowing and will put in a large acreage of

In order to give our eastern readers an
idea of how farming is carried on in this
valloy, wo will state that one of our farm
ers. Mr. A. B.'Conley, of the Saudridge, is
now running sixteen plows on his great
farm, and this is only a starter.
The next meeting of the Uniou County
Teachers' Association will be held in this
city, commencing Friday evening April 10,
and continue through Saturday following.

methods, etc., while the evening will be de

George Bawl, the barber, has rented the
store building of J, H. White and will have
it reiitted up in good shape. He intends
to run a partition across the back end and
use it for his shop, and will soon put in a

Every effort Was exerted to save all
movr.ble valuables from the llaine, and
in n short spay, of time a major portion
of tho liquors and fixture from the
four saloon building, was saved. It
was only by puperhunmn efforts and
the most fortunate circumstances that
tho lire was confined to the east side
of the block in which it originated.
By tho judicious u.-e of wet blankets
the drug store of Rogers A Wells, and
the wooden buildingti adjoining, as
well us the Ralston building, was
saved from destruetion. The wooden
building belonging to Fred Proebslol
in the rear of Harston and Hnelat's
establishment was torn down, hut even
with this precaution, it was a mere
ease of good luck that no further dam
age resulted.
There was a si iff breeze from the west
when the fire started, hut it had some
what subsided when the two-story brick
buildiug became enveloped in flames.
As soou as the tioor of this building
was burned out the upper walls fell to
ward the center, and this most fortunate
circumstance had the effect of subdu
ing the flames.

A very pleasant party, in which dan
cing was indulged, was given at the
residence of SLr. and Mrs. J. L. Carter,
in South Uniou, last Saturday night,
it being the occasion ot the 18th birth

time ago to have his hand badly injured by

Tbe I'acific Coast elevator burned at Mos
cow last week. It had SWUM bushels of
wheat in storage. The farmers who owned
it will not lose anything because their re
ceipt provided for insurance. The eleva
tor had capacity of W,000 bushels. It will
be replaced by one much larger.
The many fi lends of V. R. teller, our ef
ficient deputy sheriff, will be sorry to leant
that he has resigned bin position and will
soon take his departure for his home In l?n
gle valley. Mr. lrshcr bus made a good
ottlcer and ha gained many warm friends
while here, but owing to ill health he is com
pelled to retire from active busines.
JIall Brothers have sold their residence
property iu South Union, occupied by
Whit, to the Slater Itros. who are working
for them, and hao purchased the residence
of , I. W. Kennedy iu North Union, where
Whit will hereafter reside. Mr. Kennedy,
we understand, will soon take his depaiiuie
for the Willamette valley to reside perma
nently. The postoilice department has recently
issued a now form of money order, which is
a great improvement over tho old one.

The ladies of the M. K Church in this

this week. They are of very line flavor.
Mr. Morris showed us a Chinese orange or
shaddock that was sent witii the shipment.
It is quite a curiosity and. will be on exhibi
