AMERICANS WHO VISIT THE QUEEN. "
Our Secretary r LcRutlnn Sa Tbey Are
Deiuiirrittlc imtl illgiiillcd.
Mr. Henry White, t-ecri-tury to tho
Aiiiericfin legation in liinjlnml, is vis
iting Uh relatives and friends. Mr.
White has been secretary to foreign
legation Mtiee ISSIJ. Imvitii: been first
appointed to the court of Vienna. He
remained there but a Miort time, as tho
climate did not agree with trie health of
his wife, and at his request ltn was
transferred to the eotirt of St, .lames in
JSS4. and hit been there continuously
bince that tiiuu.
Air. White is a pleasant and interest
ing talker. As the charge dallaires of
tho legation it ii his ditty to present to
the court all American who desire tho
privilege. No discrimination, ho says,
is made in ceremony. All Americana
vh o wish to attend a presentation can
Have their wish grat tiled, provided they
v
uru au fait morally Thev make their 1
desire known at tho legation and their
names are sent to the lord chamberlain
by the charge d'affaires, and the names
aro placed among those who are to be
received at the no.U presentation. The
ipteen is more generous to men than to
women. The former have eight oppor
tunities during tho season of attending a
"levee." as the reception for gentlemen
is called, while for the girls and yearn
ing mammas but two "drawing! rooms"
aro held, one in March and one in May.
Uumarried gent lumen and ladies aro
never admitted together except under
rare circumstances. A man may ac
company his wife, or vice versa.
Tho court oliicers aro punctilious on
these occiisions in the matter of dress,
and many a woman's heart has liutter
ed hi direful anticipations when pre
paring her toilet for these occasions for
fear she could not pass muster. The
trains must be of a prescribed length,
and dresses are invariably cut decollete.
Tho rule is strictly observed, tho only
exception being in case of sickness. To
bo admitted otherwiseeven in such cases
permission must be secured belorehand
from the lord chamberlain. The men
adorn themselves for these occasions in
the dress of their respective countries,
and it is bad tiiste to appear otherwise.
Tho Americans, of course, appear in
tho conventional evening suit of black.
Ho sword is required, and. altogether,
front the democratic nature of tho
United States government, Americans
are given more license than other na
tionalities. American travelers have been very
much ealuniniiited. Mr. White says, by
writers v.u depict them as resorting to
all sorts of petty schemes to obtain
audience with the queen. While occa
sionally a shoddy person might bo en
countered whose impudence is greater
than ins good taste or 'judgment, and
who gives occasion for tho ridiculo that
Americans are frequently made to hear,
it is nevertheless tho rule that citizens
of the United States nro not pushing,
and that they show more indifference
to distinction by notice front royalty
than do travelers from other countries.
Ho ha seen atlluent merchants who
have conio front tho humblest walks in
life deport themselves with more grace,
dignity and self possession at a levee
than many whose intercourse with
royalty had been more extended.
European travel by Americans, ho
says, has wonderfully increased of late
years. Four or live of the largest hotels
in London are nearly always filled with
them during the season. Many, of
course, come to the legation, but the
great majority do not. They go quietly
and systematically about their travels,
as they do about their business at home.
In alluding to democracy Mr. White
says it may astonish one to hear it, but
ho thinks it is a fact that there is as
much if not more democracy in England
than hero. Many a peer, hesays, would
willingly exchange his title for a seat in
tho house of commons. A man may
Inherit a title, but if his merits do not
command respect and admiration his
empty title will not secure them to hhn.

How to Measure Wheat.
About the time that Daniel Drew bo
gan his Wall street career ho was up in
tho country one time to visit somo
friends, and two farmers called upon
liim to decide a case. Ono had sold the
other live bushels of wheat, and pro
posed to measure it In a half bushel
and sweep tho top of tho measure with
a stick. Tho other objected, aud Uncle
Daniel was asked to decide.
"Well, legally speaking, a bushel is
only a bushel," ho answorod.
"And etui tho measure bo swept oil?"
, "I think it can."
"What with?"
"Well, if I was selling wheat I should
probably use half tho head for u flour
barrel."
"Which odgo of it?"
"Gentlemon, that is a polnr I cannot
now decide on," sighed tho old man.
"If I was selling to a widow or a
preacher I am ccrttdn that 1 should
sweep tho measure with tho straight
edge, but if I wn selling to u man who
pastures Ids cows in the road mid his
pigs in Ida neighbor' corn I'm airaid I
should use tho circular side and scoop
a little to boot. "-Wall Street News.

Old rtxlilunrd Wntc-U Chain.
Among the presents showered on
blushing brides this scasou figures tho
old fashioned watch chain, more than a
yard long. After many years of sus
pending watches from chatelaines, from
short chains hanging from a brooch and
from ribbons secured by monograms;
after wearing them in breast pockets or
tucked into tho bosoms of dresses with
short chain pendants, nfter carrying
them in leathern straps or slipped into
tho clasp of n bag or using them as dec
orations for tho handler of parasols and
umbrellas, card cases and portemon
naies, aa clasps for bracelets or concealed
beneath a miniaturo in a brooch or be
hind tho heart of a floral pin fashion
has gone bad: to tho ancient stylo of
chain thrown around tho neck that our
mothers and grandmother affected.
Tho new chains arc very lino and gen
erally arc divided at intervals of three
or four inches by pearls, turquoises or
garnets, strung liko beads, or by small
diamonds, rubies, sanjihires or moon
stones, set clear.
As for tho watch it is hidden in the
folds of tho dress or carried in a side
pocket. It is small in size, and tho back
fckould bo encircled or entirely incrusted
with gems similar to thoso on the chain.
Ono very handsome watch and chain
that I saw tho other day among tho
dainty trifles of u bridal corbeillo was
ornamented with both rubies and dia
monds. Tho ctones wero set alternately
between short longtlt3 of tho chain and
formed a spiral on the back of tho
watch. Paris Cor. Jewelers' Weekly.
Ilontcn to a Mummy.
Tito phrase "beaten to a mummy" has
been familiar to mo from my youth up,
and I have always understood it as
equivalent to beaten to a jelly. Does it
not refer to the medicinal substance
' formerly known as mummy, which kept
j its place in our dispensatories until pretty
late in the last century? It was vari-
ously composed and not always of tho
j same consistence, but its general appear
I ance would probably resemble that of
soft pitch.
I speak now of tho spurious kinds,
j which wero doubtless most common.
1 Even tho "genuine'' sorts wero not, how
' ever, necessarily Egyptian. Penichcr,
in his "Traito des Embaumemens" (Par
j is, 1699), gives directions for the compo-
sition of mummy from human flesh ex
pressly for medicinal purposes. Ho rec
ommends certain parts only of the body
to bo used, and these to be dried, macer
ated and spiced out of all likeness to
their natural condition. Mummy so
prepared entered into a great variety of
"balms" and other medicaments, for
which Penicher in his concluding chap
ter gives recipes from old writers.
Some of these have the consistence of
oil, others that of an ointment. It is
clear, from Vfib references in Nares, that
in our own country mummy and its
preparations wero well known, and from
the "make mummy of my flesh," which
Nares quotes from an old play, to
"beaten to a mummy" is a natural and
an easy step. Notes and Queries.

The Italian Count Sergardi is an enter
taining conversationalist and has the
national fondness for music. Ho was
much amused when told of Tamagno's
behavior in this country and that the
great tenor brought his own brother
along as his valet.
"That will bo good to tell in Rome,"
ho said. "Tamagno's traits aro so well
known thero that it will bo appreciated.
Italy has often laughed tit him. Ho was
a street car driver in Turin and is with

difficulty in personally teaching him his
part in 'Otello.' Romotimongo an Italian

nn audience by tho czar.

It need not surprise any ono to drop
into an evening gathering or a quiet
home circle find find peoplo who wear
spectacles across their noses and carry
dignity by tho ton trying to snap a row
of ivory chips into a littlo wooden cup.
That is tho now game, christened tiddlc
dy winks. It requires a small wooden
cup callod a wink pot and two dozen
bono or ivory chips called winks, also
four larger one3 about tho size of an old
fashioned pants button, known aa tiddle
dies. Thero is a cushion to snap the
chips upon, or you can spread a small
square of Brussels carpeting under the
tablecloth, which answers just as well
if not better. Tho trick is to snap tho
winks into the wink pot by means of tho
tiddledies held between tho thumb and
finger, tho winks lying flat on tho cush
ion or tablo. This is the game of tho
season tho great socitil snap, so to speak.

Tho consumption of pino from tho

Cincinnati uses 2,500,000 cabbages
every year for its sauerkraut manufac
tories. Its supply is drawn from Michi
gan, of which Detroit is headquarters,
and also Illinois, where Chicago is the
distributing point. The cabbages are
generally sold by the ton, the price rang
ing from $10 to $25 per ton. Tho trade
of Cincinnati in kraut extends through
Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and
Georgia and into tho Virginias.
Ono of tho greatest problems of the
futuro is thought to bo tho tranforma
tion of carbon energy into light upon
the samo principle that the glow worm
and firefly givo their light, and when a
single pound of combustiblo material
will furnish as much light as is now ob
tained from a ton of coal.
When peoplo do not particularly like
each other it is sometimes said, "There
is no lovo lost between them." Tho
phrase occurs in tho old ballad of "Tito
Babes of tho Wood." and in a talo of tho
days of Shakespeare, entitled "Mont
cheusey." When grapes tire served do not spit

mouth into the half closed hands, from
whence thoy should be transferred as
unostentatiously as possible to tho plate.

Like n miserablo wretch i-nei'ded in
tho deadly fold of the hiim oml;i, hope

will is rapidly escaping from his grasp,
and his mental sufferings over the con
sviouiness of the fact ate indescribable
In this fast American age of ours this
dread malady is rapidly incrcrtsing. The
vital statistics of the last census, as well
us those of all the Lunatic Asylums of
tho country show this to lo a fact. All
eminent nerve and brain specialists agree
that not alone to mental (network is this
diead condition attributable, but that to
follies, excesses and dhsipntion ( bring
ing on as they do nerxotts exbaustion
depleted vital force and loss ol manly
vigor), is tlie awful cuise of Paresis
inoro frequently traced. StntiMics show
that when one" student or brain-wot ker
is aH'eded, a dozen others are men who
have led fast lives, or tho?o who stiller
from the results of boyish ignorance.
Tho man who commences to feol the
preliminary symptoms of this most in
sidious anil awful disease, realizing hiB
powers are failing, anil that something
should he done, frequently calls on tho
average medical practitioner, who, being
unable to help him, either laughs at his
troubles as "imaginary," or gives him
some siinplo, harmless prescription, of
no benefit whatever. Only from tho
eminent specialist on brain and nerve
diseases, who has devoted a life of study
in that direction, can tho victim hope
for relief, and even the expert is power
less to cope with tho diseasu when it has
been allowed to advance too far. Three
plnsicians attached to the medical stall'
of the Cosmopolitan Dispensary have
made diseases ol the nerves and brain a
liie study, and with tho aid of modern
.American and Kuropean discoveries in
medicine, galvanism and electricity, are
luvviui! wonderful success in treating
