Tho wily suul the prince of Wales ever re

take llio breath away from her mother. It
was tho mmu: the prince fell on tho salon

had overcharged himself with wino whilo at

Rou'.nern girl, distinguished looking, hand
some mid iiossionately fund of dancing, who

her for a wultz. On the instant and while
her mother was dumfoundod for want of a

"But you forget, Miss Winslow," continued
tho emissary, "that thin Is a royal command."

The Boston Commonwealth relates what it
cays Is a hitherto unpublished story of Daniel
Webster. One autumn during tho prevalence
of a strong northeasterly storm, Mr. Webster,
in company with somu two dozen othor
sportsmen, went to Brnnt Hock to shoot
ducks. Tho birds were flying in considerable
numbers, but onlyu few passed over the rock,
and consequently tho priect for fut bags
was rather slim. However, tho tide of Mr.
Webster's luck was turnod beforo tho day
was over In tho following manner: Two ad
venturous sportsmen were cruising in a small
boat oir tho rock, popping away at tho birds
in a lively fashion that filled the sportsmen
on tho rock with envy. Suddenly a Mock of
about thirty brant hove in sight near tho
boat, and when within rango tho floating gun
ners banged away iuto the midst of them,
dropping several, Tho birds, confused by tho
discharge of firearms aud the loss of sotno of
their number, wheeled and made directly for
tho rock. As thoy passed over every gun was,
of course, discharged, and all but two or
three of the flock fell upon the reck. A ques
tion that at otico presented itself, of courso,
was, "Who killed tho birdsf' Each ono of tho
twenty-four sportsmen was sure that at least
two or three birds had fallen beforo his gun,
and us thoro were only some two dozen birds
in all killed, it did not look as if a division of
tho spoil could bo readily accomplished. Mr.
Webster, howover, was equal to tho occasion.
Assuming a mock judicial air, ho addressed
tho group of excited gunners: "My friends,"
said lie, "this casois easy of adjudication; I'll
buy the birds und you can divide tbo money."
Aud this ruling of tho "court" was accepted.

Beau Brummell, tho glass of fashion in his
day, died in poverty ut Caen. Many droll
btories are told of him. He was ouco mot
limping on Bond street. On being nskod
what was the matter, he replied thut he had
caught a cold in Ids favorite leg, adding: "I
lott my carriage yesterday evening on my
way to town from the pavilion, und tho infi

damp stranger."
Sleeting IjuIv at Ascot, ho entered
Into conversation with her, on which sho ex
pressed surprise that ho should waste his tlmo
on so unfashionable, a orson, and begged him
to think of the risk ho ran of being seen.
"My dear lady." ho replied, "pray don't
mention it; thoro is no ono n'oar us."
Tho story of "Wales, ring the boll," Brum
mell always denied, but it Is quite true that
after his quarrel with the prince, on meeting
his royal highness, who was determined to
give him the dead cut, Brummell turnod to
the friend he was walking with, whom the
prince had accosted, and coolly asked:
"Who's your fat friend f"

The courtesies extended between membors
of tho early California legislature wero ofton
characteristic of the times. A groat deal of
tho bitterness which was then felt between
tho friends of tho great San Francisco vigi

Many anti-vigilance bills wero introduced

voked much discussion, although it was flllod
with absurd and unconstitutional provisions.
Leo, being of an ardent tomioruinont, spoko
long and warmly for his bill. A crushing
reply was made by Caleb Burbank, who was
a man of largo physique, as well as strong
Intellect, and afraid of nothing. He hod
scarcely taken his seat when a pigo handed
him a note, which ivail us follows:
"Burbank:
