EVENIKO SHOWER.
In Hie evening's ( oulinu fragrance,
Whoro the raindrops brightly shine;
With ftontlo slow decadence.
MugYing lonou (lower and vine.
Now the Miu is khiniiiK brightly.
riiHtiiKoiiwnru ii)vi inn west,
And a zephyr lire athlng lightly,
Lulling turhulancc to rust.
As tlic sun is now sinking,
Causing shades to longer rovv;
livo tho stars lie-in their twinkling,
Jn tho east there shines a bow.
Illcnditic; peace with joy ami dullness,
Itids my thoughts to soar above,
Ar.il 1017,'et sorrow anil sadness,
As I view such Miciiiw of love.
JJIil such scenes continue) ever,
Ami such beauty always show,
llrittlitly sliinin. "failing never,
'I'hey would banish liiuuli of woe.
Then on Hope's unclouded river,
I could launch , nor fear to sink,
Trusting the eternal giver
Would not leave mo at Its brink.
Hut I tee by Fate's deurechi;:,
Lovely Mienes are pushing on,
While I in looking, plainly seeing,
Pleasant (.cones are fading none.
Thus I learn there's naught enduring;
Shades of beauty Ih'Oling go;
Kiirlhlv scenes uie only luring.

I'inancial topics still have the call
over ovciything else in Congressional
and administration circles. A com-
l primiso measure for adding a few mil
j lion dollars to the money now in circu
I lation has received the support of a
majority of the republican senatorial
caucus, but it does not necessarily fol
low that it will become a law, because
there are a number of lopubliean sena
tors who will, it is generally believed,
vote for a tubstilnte, which tho demo
crats will certainly oiler for the caucus
bill, providing for free and unlimited
silver coinage. Another tangle in tho
financial skein is tho well-known op
position of .Speaker Heed to free coin
age. If theio is a compromise, where
by something short of free coinage is
accepted by the silver men, us many,
in fact most people believe thoro will
be, it will bo caused by the knowledge
that no bill, under the present rules,
can get through the House with tho
determined opposition of tho Sneaker,
and not by any fear of a Presidential
veto, although Air. Harrison has al
most openly threaten'.'!! one in ease a
free coinage bill should he passed.
Hepresent.itive Pierce, of Tennessee,
who is an onthuHitstic member of the
Farmers' Alliance, and wlto swears by
the St. Louis and Ocala platforms,
believes that the sub-treasury bill
should bo openly disposed of by the
House, and not quietly pigeon-holed
by tho committee on Ways and Aleatu;
therefore he has ull'ered a lesolution in
the llout-o din cling that committee to
report the bill to the House by AIou
day, Jan. T, the following .Monday to
bo fixed for its consideration. Air.
Pierce litis little hoj o that his resolu
tion will he adopted, but thinks it will
have a good etlcct as a feeler of pulses.
Tho big light which had been for
months predicted to take place in the
House over the apportionment hill, did
not ocelli. There was no occasion for
it, as the hill which was unanimously
icported from the committee on the
Census, which contains Mich iock
bound deiuoir.itH as liepivsentalivo
HolniMii was as fair and free from par
tisanship as any simliar hill over
passed by Congress. Tho Democrats
however made the t hurt debate quite
a lively one, byattaoking tho accuracy
of the census, and Superintendent
Porter's methods, and the republicans
stoutly defended both, lvi pre.-ontative
Spinola, of New York, was tho only
speaker who di eended to vitup "lation.
lie fcaid that Secretary Noblo's letter
to (lov. Hill wa,s a blackguard, impu
dent letter, unworthy to eininato from
one calling himself a gentleman. No
opposition is expected to tho bill in
the Senate.
Tho election of Air. Alills, who is
generally recognised as tho democratic
leader in tho House, in otlotlng a cou
cunont resolution for n Congressional
recess from Dec. 22 to .Ian. f, bus
caused it to he belhivcd that tho demo
orats want an ex tin uesuion of the
Fifty-iioeond congru held in tho
spring. Tho lesolution wan lofernd
to tho committee on Way and Aloins,
which is not likely to report it back to
thu Homo without shui toning tho
time of thu rtteots by at lcat half, pet
hups more. Somo day thoro will bo
no riieoas. This qtiettion Un't worry
ing many fciMiutors or member Im
cauco tho must of them will take all
tho holiday they want, whether Con
gress remains iu utealun or nut.
No regret aio ox pressed by senators
or rtfpro4nutiri from tho uortlnveM
at tho news of the killing of Sitting
Hull.

of Labor are pushing the now organi
zation. Tho House hits under eonsidetation
ths substiliiti r ciorted by the com
mittee on .Merchant .Marino for the
two subsidy shipping bills that wore
passed by the Senate at tho last session.
Several prominent republicans, includ
ing Iloprescntativo, Cannon, are op
posed to the bill, but from tho best in
formation 1 can obtain it will probably
pass.
Tho House committee on eointnorco
has inado an adverse report on the
Senate bill to amend tho Interstate
Coininetee law, by allowing tho com
mission to hold special sessions in any
part of tho United States and to allow
a single commissioner or agents aj
pointed by the commission to prose
cute inquiries under the law.
Next week a joint committee will
try to find out something about the
puichaso of American industries by
IOnglish syndicates. Among those
summoned to testify are Air. Pillsbury
of the Alinneapolis Flour Alills, and
Frank Jones and J. V. Ilawson, of tho
Portsmouth, N. IT. Ilrewories.
It now looks as if the election bill
would become a law, as a republican
caucus has decided that tho lulcs shall
be changed as soon as tho new silvor
bill, which is to betaken up next week,
is disposed of. J. H. C.
