And to gladden the brow where furrows

To sond green grasses, whero fochlo feet

To touch faint licnrts with a nuislo sweet,
And to drown Life's woes In a gleeful
chime."
Welcome, thou bearer of peace, today,
Uest a bit from th v rtmccd way.
Arc the joys you ncatter abroad ns you fly,
riuckcu wiieru tliu roses never uior
Is there not a land by tho southern .sen
From all Life's Ills and Its aching, froo?
Do tho silver threads steal into tho hair
In tho homo of th birth, whero tho sky

Do feet crow feeble, and eves urow dim
Where the summer sons slug an endless

Frav is thero a balm thnt will kill Life's

"Through many a clinic my wings have
swept,
In pprlngimd summer and sun and snow,
And men in every latin navu wept
And asked mo the same, but I answer
No.'
Tlioro is no land whore tho roses bloom
From spring to spring, as you think they

Mv home o'er tho sea, like thine, has gloom
And storm-clouds sweep through tho
a.tiro blue.
There H no balm that thy bosom yearns,
To take from our load one destined part
Dut the bet'er man holds peace and learns
That Life's first grace is a patient heart."
So tliu tliu is cast, (hero's no retreat
From our onward tramp, with tottering

No balm that will cast to tho winds Life's

No linmt that can hclp'to sever Us chains;
No youth to regain n paths to retrace
No tints to freshen tho furrowed face;
Then tell mo, messenger, did you seo
My ships as thoy homeward sail to mo?
What fatois theirs, which I Mintafar?
Can they livo o'er tho stormy bcus that

Thoy aro frelphted with Hope, but tho winds

Tho Midden wreck of a high hopo brings

The Bonent of Newspaper Training.
I boliovo I have demo everything
which an editor or publisher over linn
to do, from directing wruppors up to
writing tho biography of u president
within an hour after his death. This
means, if the training bo continued
through many yours of life, and if one
bo under a good chief, that one gains
of neeossity, tho ready use, at least, of
Ids own language Wo newspapor
men muy write English very ill, but
wo writo easily and quickly. So thnt
to us, who havo boon in this business,
thcro is something amazing to hear
a clergyman say that ho ocottpied a
wcok in composing a sormon, which
was, at tho outside, thirty-itvo hun
dred words in length. One can un
derstand absolute inability to do it till;
but no uowMiapor man understands
how a man, who can do it, can spend
iniuy-six nottrs m doing it, it you
lmvo to sond "copy" upstairs, hour
after hour, with tho boy taking slips
from you, ono by ono, as thoy aro
writton, and you know that you aro
novcr to soo what you writo until you
read next day in tho paper, your copy
will bo punctuated carefully, writton
carefully, and will bo easily read. That
in ono thing. Another thing goes
with it. You will form tho habit of
determining wltat you moan to euy
beforo you H.ty it, how far you want to
go, ami whoro you want so ston. And
this will bring you to a valuable habit
of life to tUiud by what lias been
decided. Napoleon gave the enmo ad
vice when ho aid, "If you tot out to
take Vienna, take Vienna." For these
rCMtvona I am apt to recommend young
wen to write for tho press early in life,
luting well aware that the habit of
doing this 1ih boon of benefit to mo.

WASHINGTON.
News of the Week an Noted by Our Res
ular Correspondent.
Washington, I). 0. Dec. 12, 1800.
EniToit Oukon Scout:
Forcing tho Force bill, against tho
real sentiments of a respectable minor
ity of its own party, has gotten tho re
publicans of tho Senate into an ugly
predicamont, and were it not for the
imminent danger of a financial panic,
which was so strikingly set forth by
Senator Gorman in a twenty minute
speech this week, that is threatening
our country there would bo no sym
pathy for them. They sowed the wind
and as a natural consequence aro reap
ing tho whirlwind. There is a 6crious
revolt in their ranks, and unless tho
Forco bill can be crowded through at
onco it will never go through.
Senator Plumb, who showed by his
vote against tho McKinley bill that
ho considered tho interests of his con
stituents to bo of more importance
than the wishes of tho republican lead
ers, hits given formal notico that if tho
Forco bill is not speedily disposed of
ho intends to move that it be laid asido
ami that bills for freo coinage and
othor financial relief of tho people bo
taken up ; Senator Toller has gono on
record as opposing tho bill; Senator
Washburn has stated privately that he
would not voto for it, and most tigni
ficont of all, Senator Quay, who has
been paired on this measure with Sen
tor Faulkner, has released Mr. Faulk
ner from tho "pair" and gono home.
Tho republican senators held a caucus
Wednesday nignt. to try to reconcile
tho dimnonccs of opinion and find
some hole to crawl out, but thoy did
not succeed; and tho whole thing Forco
bill and financial matter, was post
poned to another caucus to bo hold
Monday. Jn the meantimo tncy aro
trying to wear out the democrats by
long sessions of tho Senate, whicl
meets at ten o'clock and has a daily
night session.
Tho fact that tho republicans of tho
Houso Census committee havo deter
mined to go ahead with tho apportion
merit bill which they havo agreed to;
on a basis of .'1(55 members of tho House
without making any provision for tho
additional members that Now Yorl;
would ue oiuiueu to it a recount was
made of tho population of Brooklyn
and New York city, is taken to mean
that tho republican bosses havo do
cided that no recount should be had
Mr. Harrison is moving Heaven and
Earth, so to speak, to prevent tho pas
sago of a freo coinage bill by Congress,
and fearing that Speaker Jtccd might
not succeed in stopping it in tho House,
ho has been consulting with a number
of prominent republicans in order to
diseovor something that might satisfy
the cravings of tho appetite of the sil
ver whale, and it is believed that it has
about been decided to oiler tho project
oi the immcdiato purchase by tho
Government of all tho silver bullion
now in this country for that purpose,
but tho Bilver men say that nothing
short of freo and unlimited silver coin-
ago'will satisfy them.
Ex-Speaker Keifer isdaily to ho scon
on tho floor of tho House, and it is
sutd, and generally bolioved here, that
ho is thoro lobbying for tho notorious
ship subsidy bills, which Mr. Harrison
has shown so much interest in, and
which contains ono of the largest "jobs"
ever brought beforo Congress.
Secretaries Windom and Noblo have
become so alarmed over the pension
payments, which bid fair to orcato
such a big Treasury deficit in tho noar
future, that they lmvo laid tho matter
beforo Mr. Harrison, in tho hope that
some feasible method of reducing these
payments by revising tho pension rolls,
or otherwise, may bo coucooted. Thoy
have succeeded in getting tho peuclon
coinmitleos of tho House to decido
that no special pension legislation
would bo reported at tho present ses
sion.
Commissioner Jlauin still hangs on,
this Line of Any House in Eastern Oregon. Bo Not Fail to call and Examine Them.
BLLER,
and tho investigating committee, which
has been afraid to submit its white
washing report, has refused to allow
Representative Cooper to submit proofs
of his charges of the improper actions
of Kaum in his (Cooper's) district dur
the recent campaign.
It is hoped that Mr. J. W. Hatha
way of Montana, who has just been
elected Postmaster of tho house of Ho
presentatives, to succeed Wheat
bounced for crookedness at the fag end
of tho last session, may enjoy the hon
or of being tliu last Republican official
over elected by that body.
Tho Now York Representatives sue
cceded in defeating in the Houso the
Plumb resolution for tho removal
tho remains of Gen. Grant to Arling
ton cemetery.
Notwithstanding the fact that four
of tho regular appropriation bills have
been reported to the House, anu ono
of them passed, the belief is growing
that an extra session will have to bo
held early in the spring.
It is generally Lelievcd that Mr,
Harrison has finaly determined
to
put Attorney General Miller on
bench of tho Supreme court, and
the
his
nomination has been daily expected
this week. If made, this nomination
will create much dissatisfaction among
tho republicans.
Tho Maine men sny that Gon. Alger
has agreed to take second place on tho
ticket with Blaine. But nobody has
agreed to take second place on the
ticket with poor Harrison.
