JUSTICE AT LAST.
An old man on Ills sick-bed lay,
And knew the time was drawing near
When he from earth must puss nway,
Through death's dark valley cold and
drear.
IUh teelilo form convuled and pained
Naught now to him can comfoit give;
Tim hoarded wealth which he has pained,
No pence can give, or pain relieve.
His o-ily Hon he'd spurned from home,
Nor ono- in kindness for him nought,
Or cared to know where lie might roam,
And now lie s tortured with the thought.
For now too late to make amends,
lie learns that son is now no more;
A widowed wllebereftof friends,
Is left in sorrow deep and sore.
The old man's eyes with tears are dim
He feels the wrong tliat he has done
11, nnllu tlin tl'titriu lltifn littll
alio brings with her, her stripling son.
Upon the youth he rest his hands,
As on his own he'd often done;
Then speaks: '1 give to you my lands,
In justice to my own dead son."

A COTTON PRESS.
Methods of Balling and Marketing
ton In tho Bouth
COt-
Rau:ioii, N. C. Nov. 1, 181)0.
Editor Ohkoox Scout :
A cotton gin and cotton press are
generally together. A cotton com
press is a dill'orent concern. Cotton
gins and presses are located near tho
planter. Tho cotton compress is loca
ted at the principal shipping points.
Tho gin iB a machine, invented by a
Yankee schoolmaster down South, for
tho purpose of soporuting tho teeds
from tho lint. A good healthy cotton
boll will contain more than twenty
seeds. Tho cotton as pic kid from tho
Loll is poured into a hopper and tho
seeds and lint pour out soporatoly.
Tho cotton press iB very much like a
hay press; making tho bales larger
than tho hay bale. A cotton bale as
it leaves tho press is about two and a
half feet thick, four feet wido and six
feet long. It is partially covered by
coarso sacking of some kind and
hooped with tarred iron straps. Its
weight will vary from four hundred
and fifty to iivo hundred pounds.
Buyers for shipping aro now paying
lrom nine to ten cents per pound. Tho
weight of bales varies so little, that a
cotton plan tor will tell tho valuo of
his land or crop by telling how many
bales his land will produce.
At tho time of this writing, farmors
aro hurrying tho cotton to market as
fast as possiblo. About mid-day on a
pleasant day, tho street leading to tho
compress is almost a solid procession
of teams, wagons, and carts, hauling
from ono to live bales. Wo havo Been
downright races between mulo teams;
for tho llrt placo in reaching tho cot
ton platform. Tho cotton platform
surrounds tho compress and is threo
hundred by live hundred feet in ex
tent. On tho street edge of this plat
form aro olllces and weighing scales of
buyers. Tho number of bales brought
on a good day is nearly enough to
covor this platform with hales stand
ing on cud. These hales, of (ho she
above givon, aro too large for railways
and steamships. They must bo mudu
smaller, not by division but by com
pression. And now wo uro ready for
the compress. Tho machinery sug
-riifim niri-Mih . -
gests tho powerful machinery of largo
iron working establishments. It has
no engine, and yet its huge press, steam
pipes, and frame, resemble the cylinder
and tho frame of a large side
wheel steamer. Tho boilers aro one
hundred and sixty horso power; and
carry, for, every day work, ono hun
dred and ten pounds of steam. The
woik of this hugo and powerful ma
chine is to compress the ordinary cot
ton bale of market, into a bale of one
thud its size for shipment. Tho bale
is placed on its edge, on a large iron
surface, after its iron banding has been
ptrtially removed. The steam is let
into a largo pipe, and tho iron platform,
with its fleecy white load, rises, press
ing the cotton nguint nnothcr immo
vable iron table above. Tho lint is
compressed with as much ease, ap
parently, as our readers would crush
the first fall of fleecy snow in your
hands. Tho bale goes into the com
press 60 hard, as not to bo easily cut
or torn apart. While in it, busy hands
put now iron bands around it, so rapid
ly, that an observer will watch a long
time before seeing how it is done. The
balo leaves tho compress, one third its
original size and so hard that the
dray hooks of tho laborers will not
penetrate beyond tho sacking. Tho
bales are now ready for shipmeut.
Our readers can sco them at any cot
ton mill in tho North or West. A fair
idea of tho amount of cotton handled
can bo formed from this fact; a good
concern will compress a balo a minute
during tho wholo twenty-four hours.
Threo hundred and twenty-four tons
of cotton. Nearly sixty thousand dol
lars in valuo before shipment; or
ono hundred thousand dollars at tho
mills of the North.
