THE APPOMATTOX APPLE TREE.
Only Ono Northern Mm AVIio ot a Vot
tinii of tho I'mnous Iti'llc.
A recent article in Tho Atlanta Con
stitution said nil the published state
ments that numerous persons in tho
north had relics from the Appomattox
apple tree were absolutely fnlbe. It
stated, upon the authority of Confed
erate generals who were present tit tho
surrender of Gen. Lee, that only one
man connected with tho Union force
had ever obtained any portion of that
tree and that ho had only a po"tion of
tho root or trunk. It explained that
tho whole treo had been cut to pieces
by members of tho Confederate army
beforo tho Union forces came upon tho
ground, and that tho master of trans
portation of tho Union army who, at
Gen. Lee's request, supplied tho Con
federate army with rations, was only
able to secure tho last remaining por
tion of tho tree, and that it was forty
eight hours after he appeared before
any other member of the Union forces
had access to thu field. The article also
added that tho sole possessor of a piece
of this historical treo north of Mason
and Dixon's lino was Col. Bates, now
of Philadelphia.
Tho writer of Tho Inquircrascertain
ed that tho person referred to was
George II. Bates, at present proprietor
of tho Oriental hotel in this city, who
was at tho time of the surrender of
Leo's army master of transportation of
tho army of tho Potomac. Mr. Bates,
when questioned upon tho subject
gave his statement of the matter as fol
lows: "Yes, sir. Tho statement is correct,
and 1 am tho man referred to. When
I have heard and read accounts of per
sons having canes and other articles
made from that famous treo I have
been amused, because I know that I tun
tho only man north of Mason and Dix
on's lino who over obtained a relic
from that tree. This is what occurred
on that memorable April day when
Leo surrendered. I was master of
transportation in tho Army of tho Po
tomac. Immediately upon Gen.
Grant's return after his meeting with
Gen. Lee, who had surrendered, in
compliance with Gen. Lee's request to
have food sent to his starving troops,
I received orders to prepare a train of
wagons with rations and to tako them
beyond our lines under tho flag of
truce into tho enemy's lines nnd report
to Gen. Iee.
"A speedily gathered nineteen wag
on loaded train of rations passed
through our lines nnd passed along
tho road near tho famous tree under
which Lee had waited for Gen. Grant.
I inquired for tho Confederate gener
al's headquarters and finally I found
it, where with Gen. Leo and his stalf
officers a brief time was spent pleasant
ly. Then I asked some Confederates
standing around to unload tho wagons,
but they refused, whereupon I ordered
my subordinates to dismount and un
load, which they did grudgingly.
"Well, about half past 4 or 5 p. m.
wo started with tho empty wagons
back to our lines. On the way I saw
Confederate soldiers hacking away at
tho stump of tho treo which a few
hours previously had sheltered Gen.
Leo from the sun's rays. In reply to
my inquiry the relic seekers said they
wanted souvenirs to keep of tho treo
under which their general had sur
rendered. Then there was nothing
left but the root. I immediately took
a jack knifoandcut outa piece, which
I have preserved to tho present time,
and another picco which I handed to
my carpenter, who carved out a ring
with a heart on it, which I have also
kept. I was given a pass by Gen. Leo'
adjutant general to go in and out of
tho lines nt will. I have also preserved
that. Hero it is." Tho document was
thon shown to tho writer, signed by
Gen. Leo and countersigned, bearing
date April fl, 1303.
Mr. Bates coilthlll&l liis story by
saying thnt on his next visit to tho
enemy's lints lldt tho slightest vestigo
of any portion of that tree, branch or
tXol remained, and with tho exception
of Qon. Grant and his two stall" offi
ecrs, Gen. Rawlings and Col. Leele,
no Union olllcors or soldiers passed the
lines until forty eight hours later. He
therefore feels convinced that the
statement made by the southern jour
nal is correct, that only Confederates,
with tho exception of himself, obtain
ed any portion of that historical tree.
Thero were other npplo trees at a
distance, but still in tho vicinity of
tho place of surrender, which the
Union relic hunters speedily laid tin
der tribute.
Mr. Bates showed tho writer the
pieces ho obtained the root, which L
three by six in dimensions, and the
ring with tho heart graven 'on it.
