ONE BIRD'S NAMES.
Titles Ity Which tho Krlnniiit urn Kubltlii Ts
Known In 'I'lils Country.
Pooplo who havo nover mado a study
of any branch of natural history often
speak sarcastically of tho Latin names
by which plants, butterflies and other
natural objects aro called In scientific
works. Thoy can not seo why our Xow
England "Mayflower" should not bo
called by that pretty vernacular namo
rather than by tho less pleasing foreign
namo, Epigcea repens. Not t speak of
othor reasons, howovor, it is apparent
that for tho purposes of science it is
necessary to havo names which aro not
mere local nicknames, as it were, but
names that aro recognized among stu
dents tho world over.
As an oxamplo of a confusing variety
of local names applied to tho samo bird
we may tako tho easo of ono of our small
ducks. Its "book namo" is tho ruddy
duck, and in scientific language it is
called Erismatura rubida. Tho first or
trenerie namo, Erinmatnra, is a Greek
compound, of which tho first half moans ,
a prop and tho second half a tall, that is j
to say, tho bird has a stlil tall. Tho
second or specific name, rubida, means
reddish or ruddy.
Tho duck is woll known to gunners,
and for that reason has a superabun
dance of what wo havo called local nick
names, many of which aro applied in
discriminately to this and otherspecies.
Along tho New England shoro it goes at
different points by tho following tltlos:
llluo-bill, Broad-hill. Broad-bill dipper,
Hard-headed broad-bill, Dipper, Doppor,
Dappor, Bumblo-bco coot Creole coot
Spoon-bill, Sleepy-head, Gooso widgeon,
Tough-head and Booby.
This ought to bo sufficiently confus
ing, but as wo pass south of Now En
gland wo find a suporabundauco of other
names: Mud-dipper, Butter-ball, Buttor-duck,Butter-bowl,
Battor-scoot, Blather
scoot, Blather-sklto, Sleepy brothor,
Bull-nook, Booby-coot Salt-water toal,
Browndlving. teal. Stiff-tall, Quill-tall
coot, Pin-tail. Bristle-tail, Stick-ta 1.
Spine-tail, Dip-tail diver, Dun-bird,
Hiekory-head, Greaser. Water-pai trldgo,
Steol-hoad, Book, Paddy, Noddy, Light
wood knot. Paddy-whack, Leather-back,
Dumpllng-duck, Hard-tack, nnd many
more.
It will bo noticed that many of theso
namos aro based upon the samo char
acter as tho generic scientific name
that is, upon tho stiffness of tho tall
feathers. Many others havo to do with
tho hardness of tho bird's head, and tho
dilllculty of killing it As Mr. Gurdon
Trumbull says, in tho book from which
wo havo taken thoso namos: "To put
shot Into a Ruddy is ono thing, to kill
him isqulto anothor matter."
This ability to stand fire, or, as tho
gunnors say, "to carry away shot" is
happily indicated by a namo applied to
tho bird at tho Wost Shot-pouch.
Tho goodness of tho ruddy duck's
flesh may bo gathered from such a name
as Butter-ball. Thero is anothor species
which is moro commonly known by this
name; hut its flesh is loss savory, and
Mr. Trumbull suggests that it might bo
called Oloomargarino-ball to avoid con
fusion! Evidently tho ruddy duck is looked
upon as in some respects a foolish creat
uro with sorno comical aspects. Honco
wo havo names like Sloopj'-hoad, Fool
duck, Booby and Stub-and-twist
A Wilmington gunner callod him
Dlckoy a perversion of tho common
namo Dlnkoy. "Don't you know," said
tho man to Mr. Trumbull, "how, when
thoy start they go dickey, dickey, dickey,
patting tho water with tholr wings and
foot?"
Many of theso vornacular names aro
Interesting and moro or less appropriate,
but In viow of tholr multiplicity, it 1b
easy to seo ono of tho reasons why scion
tiflo men find It necessary to namo
things for thomsolves rathor than ac
