THE OLD FOLKS AT HOME.
"William." a matron said to her mate,
As n tear coursed down her check.
"1'vo been neariy worried to death of lnte.
And scarcely -lept for a week,
For ourboy that joined in the world's
great light
Is naught luit a raw recruit.
And in hit lift letter he writes. 'To-night,

How lit l(ing fora glimpse of tins old home
Monti And the uphord behind the door.
How he'd prize a loaf of his mother's bread
Store highly than ever before.
God bless the bo ho will always find
In his moilier'j heart a place.
I'd give all the gold in the state, were It
mine,
Tor a sight of his handsome faoj.
There's the Angus cow will have to ho sold
To the lirst buyer comes around;
Each morn, fora ycir she's had to hu poind
To gentle her spirits down.
I'll make my last ycar'.i bonnet and dress
Do duty another year,
To send him money, an I rather guess
Ills lonely heart 'twill cheer."
"Well, Katy, that hoy is a genius yon

A shaping his thoughts into rhyme,
And somehow I thought he'd be rather

When starting the ladder to climb,
Hut some day 1 reckon he'll got to the top,
And sitting there tuning his lute,

That null id his fading in Unite.

And oft without dnllaror dime.

Church Dedication.
Oa Sunday, August 17tli. the, Moth
ouisi iMiiscopai uiiuroli at Elgin was
dedicated. Dr. IT. K, Hines proachet
uio dedicatory sermon, wiucli wuh
listened to by a largo and appreciative
audience. Tho Dr. also preached in
tho uflomoon;both these sorinons wero
nmstorpiecoH of eloquence and will bo
long remembered by those who heard
tlioin. At tho close of tho services ho
announced that tho ontiro cost of tho
church was $2:100, and that there still
remained a debt of $1050. on tho
building. An appeal was mudo to tho
audience nnd in a very Bhorttiinoevory
dollar was subscribed. Tho building
is a large and beautilul structure am
is ono of the largest and finest churches
in the ha Grundo district. Thin enter
priflo lnis been successful from tho
start and though tho building was
dolayud, by the burning of tho mil
supplying tho lumber and the lack of
faith on tho part of some ollleials, yot
tho church stands a momimont of
porsovoranco and energy.
Tho Woes of an Editor.
Editor Kellogg, of tho llig Bond
Empire, is in hiding at presont, says
tho Coulco City News, and his fore
man is trying to fix matters up so ho
can como homo again without tho fear
of being pulverized. In writing up
visit to a lady's house hodoscribed her
elegant selection of houso plants. He
wrote in this way: "Mm. 11 has tho
prettiest phuits in town." In making
up tho form, tho letter 'l" dropped out
of tho word plants, and tho mistake
was not discovered until tho paper was
run oil'. Tlio whole town was in an
uproar, and when tho olU'iisivo word
was pointed out to her husband, ho
armed himself with a horse whip and
rovolvor and went to tho printing
ollico with blood in hi eye. Tho
editor saw him coming and jumped
out of tho window and started for tho
canyon on a run that would have
ashamed n scalded dog. Editors have
their troubles tho sumo asolher people.

Jones it Chanccy still make the
Oregon Scout a foremost journal both
for party and for principle, butit never
sacrifices principle for party. When
Senator Notvnl, of opposite politics,
was attacked by sotno religious bigots
for his Liberal opinions The Scout in
formed these members of its own patty
that if they had no better reason for
votinc acainst the senator than his
Liberalism they might as well give up
the campaign, for on such an issue he
would bo triumphantly elected.
Our good friends Mr. and Mrs. Tar
t:ir arc as interested as ever in the
morning of the world's progress, while
the ovening of life prevails. This is the
"eternal youth" of the free mind.
G. Vincent isahowith the ling every
time. As tho Indians couldn't kill
him, so the orthodox shot is equally
unavailable, lie sticks to tho solid
earth, and takes no stock in tho winged
soul, hut in tho solo that is trampled
under foot, which really furnishes the
most genuine locomotion for tho
world's good. Hotter walk this globe
than circle about an immensity of
nothing.
Dr.Dny, in tho same line, industrious
ly and skillfully keeps people from tho
New Jerusalem. Ho will not give,
them a pass to tho "bettor land."
Grando Hondo valloy is more attractive.
"Is life worth living?" "That depends
upon the liver," would bo tho doctor's
sago advice.
U. Ghanccy nnd others give tho
hand-shako of tho Liberal heart.
Tho Hov. Sam Driver, son and imngo
of Kev. I. D. Driver, of Portland, was
present at tho lecture, and I was
pleased to make his acquaintance. Ho
oven said amen to some of my utter
ances with fine Methodist fervor. I
gavo him a copy of "My Keligious Ex
perience." Ho may travel tho same
way. His head is not altogethor after
the orthodox fashion.
So the campaign went on, short but
good. I wanted to stav longor, and
shall the next time, for there is always
a combination of good things at Union.
"The Union forever."
In tho moonlight I go out nine
miles, with G. A. Thompson and fami
ly, to their home under tho hills. The
next day the picnic, with whoso de
scription I began this article, joined its
glad array to the lino of march. In

WORK SUSPENDED.
Tho Right-of-way Must be Secured Before
Opsratlona Can bo Resumed.
Mr. Hunt has completed bin con
tract with tbu peojilo of this valloy
for tbis your with tho oxcoption of
grading througli tho lands of Hutchin
son Him. and .1. L. Hoo. This cannot
bu dono until tho right-of-way through
thu snino is secured. Work would
have, in nil probability, boon contin
ued during tho fall and winter wore- it
not for those obstacles in tho way. The
l'entlloton Trilmno has tho following
to Hay in regartl to tho matter, which
shows tho Boutiuient of the people in
that section concerning tho kickers;
From n gentleman who is on tho in
side and evidently knows, wo learn that
work on tho Grando Jtoudo extension
of tho Hunt system of railroads has been
stopped, mid that until certain obstruct
ors havo como to their senses work will
likely not bo resinned. Tho men now
employed in grading this rotul mo to
bu removed to tho sound to finish up
tho contracts at that place. It is
questionable if tho work on tho Grande
Kondo extension will over bo resumed,
owing to it disposition on tho part of
some to obstruct its building. There
is trouble to boouro tho right-of-way,
and it is possible that tho responsibi
lity for tho tho failure to build this
much needed road will rest on few
bull headed persons who havo refused
to grant tho tight-of-way through their
land upon reasonable terms. The citi
zens of that valley Imvo pledged them
selves to pay a subsidy of $100,000,
unit to secure tho right-of-way through
thu valley. This latter is now the
sticking point. Fanners are holding
out for an unreasonably large compen
sation for the right-of-way, hoping
thereby to secure a portion of the
amount they have pledged to secure
thu subsidy. Surely they are acting in
ii very short-sighted manner, nnd it is
inped they will speedily come to their
senses.
