Over these two men, was the relative
strength of tho opposing force to bo
directed; houeo the value of tho Three
Unci: delegates in that tight for su
premacy. Tho committee on creden
tials, retired, contended, returned anil
reported. It had agreed to submit tho
Thice Buck muddle to the convention.

motion prevailed. From the state
ments made the following is deduced.
Promptly at 10, clock p. m. tho com
mitteeman called the house to

tho convention. W. J. Drumhill was
chosen secietary. W. M. Hepburn and
V. .1. Drumhill wero named lor dele
gates to the county convention. Thy

Tho polls wero then declined closed by
tho chairman. Kuinblu and his ad
herents were jTrcsent, according to
Speaker Heed's rulings, but refused to
take any part in tho pruccocdings, up
to the closing of tho polls. Humble,
like Napoleon at. Waterloo, expected
reinforcements. Ho had oidorod them.
Without them ho doubttd bis strength
to capture the delegates of his homo
precinct, two dotuocra's anil live re
publicans responded, counting himself.

convention with such a following a
suborned, illiterate foreigner, a slieop
democrat, a nonresident and live

mudilli'. A motion was made to reject
the Humble delegates. Howling tho
motion much was said forum I against
its adoption. Tho disputants waxed
warm, earnest, angiy. Kou.se saw his
opportunity und omluueed it. Ho ad
droned the chair and was recognized.

his delegate friends to vote against tho
pending resolution. Ho hail rather be
defeated in tho convention than to
jeopardize tho success of the republican
party next June, iu this county. Now
came Humble's opportunity; but he
failed to embrace it. Had ho thrown
hii 1 into the broach made in tho
ranks of his delegates by House's
inanuamiuity he would have saved his
friends liom humiliation and himself
from an ignominious defeat. Why did
he not cpiing tin in his placo and wiy :
"Ah Mr. House, 1 admire your di
plomacy. It is worthy of imitation
and commendation. let us meet half
way in this dispute. You take one of
the Three Htiok delegates and give ino j
one." Had ho said this ho would havo j
regained the vantage ground lost; but
ho did not. Lieutenant Houp, with j
his forces, swept through tho broach ,
and routed his enemies foot and horse,
