    COAL-BLACK INDIANS.
A Strnntrn Savajre Trllm round In North
western Xlriimgim.
During the last seven months I have
visited all the ttvo republic of Control
America. Itut the most interesting part
of my work was the exploration of the
hitherto unknown country of the Sam
bos, in Northwestern Nicaragua. It is a
wild section, reached only by tortuous
Indian trails, covered with v.ist virgin
forests of mahogany and cedar, and un
der the dominion of tho savage Sambo,
who have never yet yielded to the au
thority of any government but their
own, giving a nominal allegiance to the
Mosquito King, the last remnant of
monarchy in tho Western world. '1 hose
Sambos are as black as ebony, possess
ing some generic identities with the
pure Congo, but widely dlHering from
him in other mental and physical feat
ures. The origin of this tribe is traced
to tho black Indians found upon the
isthmus when tlrst visited by the daring
adventurer Vasco Nunez do llalboa, the
discoverer of tho Pacific. They are
still in a barbarous state, being without
any wearing apparel and observing a
religion that is a quaint admixture of
mythology and superstition. Thoy en
tertain a blind faith in witchcraft, and
invest their sukias (success) with un
limited authority over temporal and
spiritual a flairs.
Tho religion of tho Sambo and his
worship of the god Kushika lias a strong
similarity to Puzza, an old god of the
Japanese and Chinese. Tho Sambo be
lieves that at cortain'soasons this god
goes into certain plants and animals, as
woll as giving visible manifestations of
himsolf in tho sun, moon and stars. As
a consequonco thoy havo a great many
objects of veneration. Tho medicinal
plants are supposed to receive their virt
ues and to havo been given super
natural powers through tho breath of
Kushika. Tho anaconda, which fur
nishes a superior oil for tho euro of
rheumatism, swollen joints, etc., is ven
erated for tho same reason and relig
iously protected during tho generative
season. Thoy believe that all unusual
commotions in nature, such as earth
quakes and tornadoes, aro tho visible
angry moods of Kushika, but that the
samo can bo appeased or warded oft" by
charms or oven by physical force. For
Instance, thoy think that tho storm
cloud is supported by an evil messen
ger, whom they can kill by discharging
their arrows into tho approaching omi
nous cloud.
Tho nativo doctors, or wiso men,
among tho Sambos occupy high places
in tho estimation of tho natives. They
use a few medicinal herbs in sickness,
but rely mostly upon char.ns and spells
to drive, away tho demon of disease. To
this ond they carry with them cortain
stones, seed-., teeth of wild animals or
tho anaconda, and other tilings, which
aro concealed about tho patient, who lias
a blind faith in tho curat! vo virtues of
tho charm. Tho sukia does not en
croach upon tho domain of tho doctors
in tho power of healing, but as
sumes by tho exerciso of tho "black
art" to visit tho direst calamities, upon
any ono that incurs her displeasure.
One of these witches camo near causing
tho massacre of our entire party, be
cause of an inoxplicablo disliko she had
taken to one of tho nativo guides. We
only escaped destruction by the prov
idential intervention of a thundor
storm, which was construed as tho
anger of Kushika at tho deed. A. J.
Miller, in Atlanta Constitution.
IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
An Ancient MitniiMerlpt of (lie New Testa
ment round at DiuiiiihCiiN.
We havo reason to believe that a dis
covery of equal importance to Now Tes
tament scholars with that which gave
Codex Alopli to tho world has just been
mado. Tho rumor current in well-informed
quarters credits tho now find to
Uryennois, tho learned Archbishop of
Nicomedia. Tho completion of th?
Epistlo of Clement of Koine, and the
unique manuscript of tho Teaching of
tho Apostles havo mado him famous fo"
discoveries even in this ago of discovery.
15ut if tho rumor that has come to us bo
true, and wo think thero aro good rea
sons for believing it to bo so, his name
will bo more closely identified
with tho New Testament itself.
It is said that in somo Turk
ish library at Damascus ho has
found a manuscript of tho Now Testa
ment dating from about the middle of
tho fourth century i. e., of tho samo
antiquity as the Codex Sinaiticus. In
deed, somo apprehensions aro felt
whether it is not altogother too much
like tho Sinaitic manuscript to bo of tho
phenomenal importance that other
totally independent manuscript of the
same ago would bo. If, as is said, and
wo are not yet in a position to speak of
of it as more than a rumor, tho now
Codox resombles tlio Sinaitic, not only
in tho additional books that aro ap
pended to it tho Epistlo of Marimbas
and tho Shepherd of Hernias, (wo wonder
' whether, unliko tho Sinaitic, it con
tains all tho latter) but also in tho
peculiarities of, text, it would seem to
bo almost a duplicato of tho Sinaitic,
Iwtii forming, perhaps, part of an
edition issued for tho common uso of
tho Palestinian church. Hut oven
if this should prove to be tho case, it
would tend to show that tho general
typo of text represented by it and the
fow oldor manuscripts was moro com
monly accepted than tho dofendors of
tho received text allow it to havo beon,
and may perhaps help to reassure those
strange exponents of criticism who make
much of tho quostion of numbers in tho
authorities for a reading. To tho school
of Wostcott and Hort wo should suppose
that twenty or thirty duplicates of tho
Sinaitic would make but llttlo differ
ence, savo as continuing tho correctness
of tholr theory; but to those timid critics
to whom numbers aro of importance, it
would probably bo really helpful.
Whether or not tho new manuscript (if
it exists) bo only a contemporary dupli
cate or an Independent witness, the
olvlllzod wo.l will await fuller partic
ulars with oxtromo interest London
Kguord.

THEATERS IN JAPAN.
Tobnceo Served to the Audience ns nn
Antidote to the Pluy.
From "An Artist's Letters from Ja
pan," written and pictured by John La
Farge, in tho Century, wo quoto as fol
lows: "The doctor took us on Sunday
afternoon to his club whoso name, I
think, means tho perfume of tho maple
to see and to listen to somo Japaneso
plays which aro given in tho eJub thea
ter for tho purpose. Wo went thero in
the afternoon, passing by the Shiba tem
ples, and our kurumas woro drawn up at
ono end of tho buildings. Thero every
thing was Japanese, though I hoar
stories of tho other club and its ultra
European ways brandlos-and-sodas,sin-glo
oye-glasses, etc. Howover that may
be, on tills sido wo woro in Japan with
out mistake. Wo sat on tho steps and
had our shoes taken oil, according to tho
Japaneso fashion, so as not to injuro
mats, and wo could hear during tho
operation long wallings, high notes,
and tho piercing sound of flutes
and stringed Instruments; tho curiously
sad rhythm mingled with a background
of high, distinct declamation. Wo
walked in, with careful attention to
make no noise, forgetting that in our
stocking feet wo could havo made none
had wo wished, and wo found tho doc
tor's placo reserved for him and us, and
marked with his name, writ largo. Othor
low boxes, with sides no highor than
our elbows as wo sat on tho mats, divid
ed tho sloping floor down to tho stage.
The stage was a pretty little building
projecting into tho great hall from Its
long sido. It had its own roof, and con
nected with a largo gallery or bridge,
along which the actors moved as thoy
camo on or disappeared, in a manner
now to us, but which gavo a cortain
natural sequence and made a beginning
and an end a dramatic introduction
and conclusion and added greatly to
tho plcturo when tho magnltlcent
dresses of stifl brocade dragged slowly
along to tho cadence of tho music.
"A quiet, sleepy appreciation hovorcd
over tho scone; even the devotees near
us, many of them oldor pooplo and bo
longing to the old regime, showing their
approval or disapproval with restrained
criticism. I could seo without turning
my head the expression of tho faco of
my neighbor, a fornior daimio, a man
of position; a faco of Japaneso transla
tion of tho universal well-known aristo
cratic type immovable, fatigued, with
the drooping under lip. liehind him sat
former retainers, I suppose doforential,
Insinuating remarks and judgments to
which ho assented with inimitable
brevity. Still, 1 thought that I could
distinguish, when ho showed that tho
youthful aiuatours for most of tho
actors were non-professional did not
come up to a proper standard, that his
memory went back to a long oxporienco
of good acting. And so catching aro
impressions of a crowd that I myself
after a timo believed that I recognizod,
moro or less distinctly, tho tyro
and tho master, oven though I only
vaguely understood what it was all
about For I need not tell you that tho
libretto would havo been stiU moro dif
ficult for mo than tho pantomime boforo
me; and very often it was but panto
mime, tho actor making gestures to tho
accompaniment of music, or tho decla
mation of tho choni'L'us, who told tho
poetic story. Occasionally tiieso move
ments amounted to a dance, that is to
say, to rhythmic movoments honco
called tho No danco to which emphasis
was given by rising or falling on either
foot, and bringing down tho solo with a
sudden blow.
"Wo had tobacco to cheer us.
On our arrival tho noisoless servants
had brought to us tho Inevitable littlo
tray containing the lire-box with hot
charcoal and tho llttlo cylinder for
ashes, and tea and little sugary balls;
and then, besides, notwithstanding tho
high-toned roposo of tho audience, thoro
was onough to watch."

Mrs. Helen E. Sterrett.in a recent num
ber of the Forum, contributes an article
entitled "Housekeeping in the Future."
In it she tells how in a fevycarselectrieity
will supply light lor the home, the family
cooking and washing will be done outside,
and there will be so little work in tho
household that the occupation of the do
mestic servant will be gone.
Hut Mrs. Sterrett's article is simply a
prediction, and has no more than a passing
interest for the ladies who live in 1S0O.
Theirsoeialand household cares arestrain
ing their delicate, nervous system, and the
result is terrible. Headaches, backaches,
and womanly ills are growing alarmingly
common. Many of them find that mem
ory is failing; they are unable to recall
the names of friends or tell whether they
have performed some of their usual house
hold duties.
Their nerves are in such a condition
that very slight causes, or perhaps no cause
at all, may irritate them. Life grows to be
a burden. There is no need for despair,
but there is great need of caution. Their
nerves should be built up, life fortified,
midbrain restored with that remarkable
preparation, Paine's Celery Compound.
Instead of the depressed anil languid feel
ings, nffer the Compound has been used,
they will feel active, vigorous, and happy.
To tho-e who are weak and failing, and
desire health and happiness instead ol ill
ness and misery, we earnestly urge that
they act upon this advice.
