    NATURAL SCULPTURES.
Scenic Urauttr of the Veach Spring Canyon
of the Colorado lllur.
We know so little of the scenic beau
ties of our country that everv year sur
prises us with a new revelation. The
rock sculptures of the Peach Spring1 can
yon of the Colorado river are marvels
which very few Americans have seen.
The length of the canyon is :: miles,
and the highest cllirs rise to 7.00 feet.
Some of the principal ruins-this word
seems to be the only word to apply to
them have been named from time to
time, and for the most part with Htness.
One is Solomon's Temple, another
The Pyramid, another Sunset IVak. and
still others The Sphinx, Westminster
Abbey and The Ileohivo.
Solomon's Temple is considerably over
a mile hijrh. and the denudation and
wearing of the rock by water has been
such that it represents an enormous pile
of architecture, with sculptured bas
tions, harmonious in its proportions,
with preat terraces atlts base, and prow
inp smaller toward the top. At the very
top, in the center, is a pyramidal peak
in exact proportions. This sculptured
pile is from two to four miles across the
facade, and to: see these thinps standing
up and against the clear, cloudless blue
of the Arizona sky, produces an inde
scribable eirect.
Sunset Peak goes up like a dome 0.000
feet, and when the sun sets clear and
has entirely disappeared behind the
mountains, its rellected light rests on
the topmost peak and transforms it into
a minaret of gold a heavenly light, in
deed. Another architectural piece pees by
thenamoof label's Tower, and is ."S.OOO
feet high, and this has beautiful sculpt
ured buttresses. The Castle on the
Rhine is the same height.
The Pyramid is 4,,.'00 feet above tho
river, and tho river is 1,180 feet above,
the sea.
Some of theso cliffs of oven terraces
and strata riso almost perpendicularly
to a height of 2.500 feet, and as high up
as the eye can detect, a variety of plants,
including cacti, perch and thrivo in the
crevices. Somo varieties of (lowers
bloom the year round in tho canyon, so
mild is tho temperature, even in mid
winter. Of course it is impossible for any vis
itor to appreciate the magnitude of this
scene, of ruin and desolation. The chim
ney on the top of a perfect pyramid, that
was sixty feet by actual measurement,
looks to be tho size of an ordinary chim
ney. Tho full beauty of Westminster Ab
boy, and its likeness to its venerable,
ivy-grown namesake, is very striking,
only it is a far more wonderful structure.
.lust before reaching it, and on the
same si df of t'e canyon, is tho Temple
of Jupiter, and it is unquestionably ono
oi, n not me nnest parts oi tlio canyon.
It is a mighty pile of stupendous har
mony and sculpturing, the central facade
bearing a multitude of sphinxes and '
classical images.
On tho opposite side is "Moses Striking
tho Hock," tho outline of the greatstatue
at ono point being very life-like.
On tho top of one clitf is Tho Prophet
at Prayer a kneeling liguro with out
stretched hands; and there aro many
features not yet named awaiting christ
ening from tho clever and acute visitors
yet to come. Colden Days.
TRIUMPHS OF INVENTION.
They Aro Due to Hur! Work Stliniiliiti'il liy
it I It li e I'or Wealth.
The traditions of groat discoveries
that have come by chance are, for the
most part, myths. True, a lucky accident
may occasionally give a hint to an in
ventive mind that will help towards a
long-contemplated consummation, but
such an occurrence is only a link in a
chain of circumstances all tending to a
common end. Sir Isaac Newton got such
a hint in his philosophical researches,
when, on a certain occasion, he noted
tho falling of an apple, lie had seen
many apples fall before that time, no
doubt, and no day of his previous life
could have passed without presenting to
his sight similar occurrences, having tho
same relation to tho object of his study.
Hut that particular applo happened to
fall and bo noticed by him just when
his study of the greatest of all philo
sophical problems had reached the right
point to make tho object lesson valua
ble. Tradition gives another alleged
accident, the familiar story of the ket
tle, as the turning point in tho discov
ery or invention of tho steam engine,
but ho who studies tho life and works
of James Watt will find that there was
nothing accidental in tho kettle acci
dent. It was but a link in the long
chain, all of whoso links ho wrought by
patient toil.
All the great triumphs of invention
that are now employed as factors in
human progress have reached their pres
ent development by successive stops.
Tho telegraph of I'dison's time, although
like thatof .Morse in its general features,
is very unlike that in detail, and in the
manner of operating it. A single inven
tion of i'dison, not by any means an ac
cident, quadrupled tho capacity of all
the wires strung, or thereafter tobo
strung. The enginos that drive great
ships across the Atlantic in less than six
days aro the result of the work of suc
cessive generations of brainy men. Mil
lions have been lost in experiments,
change has followed change, ono im
provement has succeeded another, until
tho marine engino of our time bears
little resemblance to thatof thirty years
ago. Oo into the pressroom of a great
nowspapor, and see tho printing ma
chines at work, and you see tho results
of hundreds of inventions, tho progress
of generations. Accident had nothing to
do with it. All has como from work,
work of tho best brains, stimulated by
the dosiro to got fame and fortune.

T H E WORLD' S MAIL.
Interesting Statistics lie KurillUK the Work
ol One Year.
An industrious statistician has been
collecting llgurcs relating to the postal
business of the entire world for thevear
of lS;o He develop-? some very sur
prising and impressive facts, in which,
however, it is exceedingly hard for tho
ordinary mind to follow him. It is easy
to read, for instance, that in tho year
)SS(5 tho people of tho civilized world
sent almost 0,000,000,000 of letters, moro
than 1,000,000,000 of postal cards, nearly
5,000,000,000 of newspapers and moro
than 100,000,000 merchandise packages,
making in all nearly 12,000,000,000 of
mail parcels. Hut who can possibly
realize tho meaning of such figures?
Wo can easily follow our statistician,
however, when ho proceeds to show us
what regions of tho world make tho
largest uso of their mail facilities in
proportion to their population.
America, with a very much smaller
population than tho continent of I2u
rope, sends moro than half as many mail
packages as tho wholo of Europe. Tho
llgures aro a littlo upward of 7,000,000,
000 for Europo and almost 4,000,000,000'
for America. i
Asia sends but a comparatively small
number, and Africa a smaller number
etill less than ono mail package in a
year to every seven inhabitants of tho
continent. ,
How great a contrast is presented by
tho caso of Australia, whero 24 letters, 1
cards, papers and parcels aro sent on an
average to every inhabitant annually!
Australia, indeed, makes tho largest uso
of its mail facilities of any continent on
the globe.
To circulate tho world's mail matter
no fewer than 500,000 persons aro em
ployed, and this matter is distributed
from more than 1M.000 post-olllees, of
which about one-third are in tho United
States. Minneapolis Journal.
CANADIAN ASBESTUS.
How It Is Mined iintl the Prices It Com
niiiiiils In the .Market.
Mining is carried on by cutting down
the hills of asbestus-bearing serpentine,
much as a farmer cuts down a stack of
hay or straw, or by open quarrying on
tho level. The rock is blasted out, and
the asbestus.separated from thocontain
ing rock, is "cobbed" i. e., separated by
hammering from adhering foreign mat
ter. This "cobbing" is a comparatively
easy matter in tho caso of the finer qual
ity, as it usually separates readily from
the gangue, but in tho lower grades
much dilliculty is experienced in sepa
rating the fibrous matter from tho non
fibrous. At best there is great wasto.
Much of tho asbestus is in thin or nar
row veins, and is wasted, as by the pres
ent mode of operating it does not pay to
separate this from tho serpentine. A
machine that will enable theso narrow
veins to bo utilized is a desideratum.
When "cobbed," the asbestus isgraded
according to purity, color and length of
liber into threo grades and bagged for
shipment. Tho finest quality or "firsts"
finds ready sale at prices ranging from
SS0 to?110 per ton; "seconds" fetch from
S."i() to S70 per ton; while "thirds" may
be valued at $1.1 to Sl.r per ton. In good
mines tho yield of asbestus is fromthreo
to llvo per cent, of tho rock quarried,
and tho cost of mining may bo put down
at $25 to Slu per ton. Returns obtained
by the (leological Survey of Canada show
that for tho year 18SS, Canada's output
was 4, 404 tons, valued at tho mines at
$255,000, and this tho output of nine dif
ferent mines. Over three-fourths of tho
wholo wtis shipped to tho United States;
small quantities going to Great Hritain,
Germany, France, liolgium and Italy,
and being used in domestic manufacturing.-
