closed up a few days ago on a writ of at
tachment. It has been quite cold in Union for a
week past, and during the nights thu mer
cury has been monkeying around zero

Kd. Smith, the man who killed Conarty
last week, was examined before Justice
Wilson, .Saturday, and was held to await
the action of the grand jury, with bonds

The right-of-way committee are at work
and as yet have met with but little or no
opposition. It is reported that some par
ties on the Sand lUdge will want pay, but
they will probably change their minds
when they take the whole matter into
consideration.

what like a sovere cold, and in the worst
cases sometimes causes the victim to spit

dangerous.
Died. At Sampler, Oregon, of 11 right's
disease of the kidneys, Dec. L'7. 18S!, John
Dowuev, aged til) years and 10 months.
Deceased was a nativu of Scotland, but has
resided in Oregon during the past ten
years of his life. He leaves to mourn his
loss a wife and four children, and two
brothers, Archie, who lives at Sunipter,
and 1!. Downie, a resident of Union.
Mr. Hunt arrived in Wullu Walla, from
the cast, several davs ago. News from
him is to the oiled that everything is in
hhip shape for building the Union exten
sion, and that all reports that may have
been put in circulation to the effect that he
had sold out, or intended to sell out, are
utterly false. Mr. Hunt will probably
visit Grande Hondo in the course of anotli

very irregular and id times is suspended
altogether. It is not an uncommon occur
rence for trains to lie stuck in the snow on

sionally and then we hear of accidents and

A warrant was issued from the Commis
sioners' court for the arrest of O. W. A.
.Stauslll and his mother, Mrs. Martha J.
istansitl, who reside on the Samlridge, and
the sheriff went after them, Tuesday. Mrs.
Stauslll, being sick, was unable to come,
but Mr. Stauslll was brought in. They
will be required to show reason why tlicv
should not be punished for contempt of
court for their refusal to turnover certain
monies to Thomp. Carroll, the newly ap
pointed administrator of the Stansill estate.
The La Grande papers make a great fuss
over the "'real ;estatc sales" that they say
have been made there recently. After ma
king due allowance for the usual cxager
ation it must be admitted that there is a
grain of truth in the statements they make.
I'.y a glance at the papers it will bo scon
that nearly all the sales that have been made
has been by the 0. 1!. Co., to"innocent"
parties. It is very plain that the 0. 11. & X.
Co. are unloading what property they have
at La Grande, and arc doing it at any price.
They know what that branch road will do
for La Grande.

held last Saturday evening the newly elect

While the railroad is blockaded and'travel
almost suspended to and from the outside
world, it is refreshing to know tltat Union
has one mail line upon which travel jnever
ceases. We allude to the route butween
this city and Cornucodia. The stages, un
der the management of Mr. Elliott, with
Frank Mallard handling the ribbons, crrivo
and depart on time, and have done so all
winter. This "imaginary road," this
'road in the clouds," this "summer road,"
this "dantphoo!road,"asthcIlakerCity and
La Grande papers were wont to call it, lias
proved to be the only road In this section
that can be kept open and In good condi
tion at all times of the year. In fact, bet
ter time can be made on it in the, winter
than in the summer, and in the winter
months it is the only safe and easy way of
ingress and egress for thu people of Cornu
copia, Sanger and thu vast mining districts
lying cast of here.

Governor I'cnnoyer has appointed Mor

this district to fill the vacancy caused by the
death of L. It. Ison.
Mr. Alfred W. Watdron and itlss Clara
Howlby. both of Sparta, Union county,
were married Dec. :50th, at the residence of
the bride's parents on lJurnt river.
Miss Ida Johnson, principal or our public
school, has been quite sick for several days
past, but Is much better now. Her place in
the sohool has been tilled by Mr. Louie Da
vis. Miss Sarah Chrisman, teacher in the In
termediate department of our school, is in
tbcCovo attending her father who is sick.
Miss Ida Davis is tilling her placu during
her absence.
Mr. A. T. Ncill received Tuesday, a littlo
black-tailed ilecr that was sent to him from
Eagle Valley, by John Frazier and Hen
Longley. It is a splendid pet and Mr. Ncill
thinks a great deal of it.
Mr. J. L. Ayers and family, of Star, Ida
ho, who have been visiting .relatives and
friends in the Covu, returned home this
week. While in Union Mr. Aycrs called
on us and subscribed for Tin: Scout.
There will be Union services in the Pres
byterian churcn Friday and Saturday
evenings and preaching Sunday morning.
