Entertainments Witnessed by tha People
or Union During the 'Week.
Taylor' Specialty Company appenred t
Wright's hall last :aturday evening to a
rather small audience. Taken all in all,
each of the performers sustained their
parts very well. Eddy and Dot Kflley, in
their funny !-ketohr., were very good,
while Fnxl Taylor in hl banjo vecialties
and hi son Master Freddy in his contor
tion and trapeze act? received hearty en
tores. The troupe next morning, however,
found itself unable to liquidate its bills and
realized that it was "a bu-tod community.''
Tho members of the company remained in
town for a few davs and loft one at a time.
The entertainment given at the Metho
dist church lat Sunday evening, by Ilev.
Driver, was hugely enjoyed by a large audi
ence who were induced to witness the per
formance by the free advertisement given
in Tub Scout. Mr. Driver's elocutionary
powers are not of the highest order, bnt
what he lacks in this respect he makes up
for in action and facial expression. Taken
altogether it is the general verdl"t that he
i a tjood comedian, in fact considerably
above the average In this line. Ko admis
sion was charged at the door, but a col
lection was taken up after the performance.
We do not think that Mr. Driver used good
judgment lit thl, for there nre people, no
matter how well they are entertained, who
Invariably sneak out without paying any
thing. As a one-inan-sliow Mr. Driver's
entertainments nre worth the money. He
is a good manager, knows how to advertise
and is not more than half a bud fellow
after all. The only thing we have to kick
about is that he did not give us a eonipli
mcntniy ticket.
On Friday evening, lnt, a social datico
was given at Davis' hull for the entertain
ment of Hunt's locating engineers and
surveying parly who were in the city. The
merriment was kept up till a lato hour,
and all .seemed to eniov themselves im
mensely, .-upper was serveii ai me cen
tennial hotel. The enjoyment was all the
more pronounced on account oi the cer
tainty of getting the railroad, and was in
dulged in not only by tho young folks but
everybody in town,
Chief Joseph.
This noted chief of tho Kez Perce tribe
recently visited Pendleton, and the E. O.
describes him as follows: "Joseph lives on
the Colville reservation, 130 miles west of
Spokane Falls. He is fifty years of age,
but looks much vounger anil is a remarka
ble fine specimen of manhood, having the
hearing of man among men, weighing about
1(,0 pounds Jle wears a neatly fitting suit
of navy blue, with United States bras but
tons ornamenting the coat. A light bluo
silk handkerchief, tied in a bow at the col
lar of a blue flannel shirt, was tho only bit
of blight color about him. II is features
are very tine and denote decided character;
his foiehead is broad and high, .slightly
sloping from a pair of heavy, beetling eye
brows, above a pair of piercing black eye-.
His hair, black and straight, U rcina'kably
lino for an Indian'.'-, and is glossy without
any bear's g;eae. He wear.-it brushed
high from his forehead, the long ends be
ing worked into two short In aids, which
fall inj front o: eueti ear. His hands and
feet are small and well shaped; of the for
mer he is very proud, and spends much
time in manicuring them. His skin Is of a
light copper i.olor, and in the sunlight
takes on a beautiful reddish hue. He is
certainly a very prepos-essing Indian."
Tho Wallowa Bridge.
The Wallowa Signal says: ."It occurs
now that the masonrvof the Wallowa abut
ment of the $S,U00 bridge between this and
Union county, is so deloctivo that the
weight of tho superstructure has parted or
cracked the stonework of tho abutment
near one side, from the top down. It is
presumed, of cpurse, that tho parties re
ceiving the bridge on behalf of the two
eoumies, failed to discover the defect; but
it was there just the same. Somebody is
responsible for this. We inquired this
week, from one who ought to know, and
wero informed it was tho act of God Al
mighty. Well, that's really too bail. And
he isn't under any bonds either. All we
have to sav Is. that if God Almighty is in
the business of ruining public property ho
should bo reported to the grand jury."

school. Quite a crowd was present, and an
enjoyable time was had. This is tho sec
ond sociable given by the scholars of this
district this winter, and tho steps they nro
making aro really practical, as they aim at
something above mere amusement. A
